EXPLANATION OF THE
Aliquot or Interchangeable System of Bodies.
For Types, Rules and Leads.
American. (1) This is the unitof measurement, and is one-twelfth of Pica, or one-
seventy-second of an inch. Itis, of course, too small for a type body, but is usedin
leads and rules. Some series of letter require the American lead in lining the faces,
where two ormore sizes are used togetherin the same line although its double, the

Saxon lead, will accomplish this in mostcases.
German (1)2) is% of Pica, and % ofNonpareil.
Saxon (2) is /lf> of Pica, and % of Nonpareil. It is the most useful of the lead and
rule bodies. Four Saxons are equal to a Brevier five are equal to a Long Primer

six are equal to a Pica.
Norse (2)<) is % of Long Primer.
Brilliant (.'>) is ^ of Pica, and 1.2 of Nonpareil.
Ruby (3lo) is /4 f Minion, and ^ of English.
Excelsior (4) is * ofPica, and }.< of Brevier.
Diamond (41.,) is *o of Bourgeois, and ^ ofGreat Primer.
Pearl (5) is }o ofLongPrimer, and % of Paragon.
Agate (o1^) is 1.2 of Small Pica.
Nonpariel (6) is % of Pica, and % of Great Primer. Twelve Nonpareils make one
inch exactly.
Minion (7) is }., ofEnglish.
Brevier (8) is >o of Columbian, and % of Pica.
Bourgeois (9) is )> ofGreat Primer, and % ofPica. Itis exactly% ofan inch.
Long Primer (10) is )^ ofParagon.
Small Pica (11) is %, of Double Small Pica.
PICA (12) is /l6ofan inch.
English (14) is 2-lines Minion aNonpareil and a Brevier; an Excelsiorand a Long
Primer. A Picaand a Saxonle;ad justifywith it.
Columbian (16) is 2-lines Brevier; a Nonpareil and a Long Primer; an Excelsior
and a Pica; etc.
Great Primer (18) is 2-lines Bourgeois 3-lines Nonpareil a Brevierand a Long
Primer. A GreatPrimer 3-em space is th;e same as a Nonpar;eil 3-emquad. Great
Primer is exactly% ofan inch.
Paragon (20) is 2-lines LongPrimer; a Brevier and a Pica; aNonpareil and an
English; etc.
Double Small Pica (22) is 2-lines Small Pica; a LongPrimer and a Pica a Non-
pareil anda Columbian. AGreat Primerand two Saxon leadsjustify with it;.
