ISSUE 146 NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2013 Sign Update
WELCOME Page
Welcome
What's really clear in this issue, is how much innovation and creativity there is in sign
making today. New types of printers, routers, films, software and display systems are
being used to make signage products with serious impact, and in a way that is more effi-
cient, quick and reliable. We cover all sorts of these new products in this issue, as well
as hear from sign companies having great success with equipment they have invested
in to grow their businesses. More and more sign companies are looking beyond the
traditional sign making, and using their equipment to make other products — even
decorating a washing machine!
One of our features take an in depth look at built up letterings and we talk to those who have
overcome significant challenges to meet demanding briefs. Such as Harrison Signs working
with Applelec to design letters that looks like they are floating over a wall made from plants!
Advancements in hardware, materials and illumination techniques mean businesses are
designing vibrant, interesting and original looking signs.
Another area of huge growth is in vehicle livery, the subject of our other feature. Again there
seems to be no end to the new colours and materials used to wrap vehicles (amongst other
things) and companies are increasingly adding this service to their repertoire. Products and
services from Dorotape, 3M, Roland DG and Vivid-Online are helping to make wrapping
exciting and the application and finish almost perfect.
Of course these companies and many more will be exhibiting at Sign and Digital UK in
2014, which we will cover in detail early next year. If you are on Twitter make sure you follow
@signanddigitaluk for an idea of what's to come.
If you have something to say about an issue in the signage sector or there is an aspect you
know a lot about, we'd love to hear from you. We'll even pay for your contributions so get in touch
to talk about any ideas you have. Till the next time...

New self adhesive fabric
Doro Tape UK Ltd recently added a new
self adhesive fabric called 'Digi-Fab' to its
range of soft signage.
Digi-Fab is a 210gsm polyester fabric
with an adhesive that can be respositioned,
and will stick to any interior with a smooth,
non porous surface. Even the worst crinkles
can be smoothed out during application,
which makes this material ideal for retail,
exhibitions and displays.
Its removable adhesive makes it easy
to replace without destroying walls, paint,
glass or whatever you stick it to! According
to the company this makes it perfect
for when you require regular changing and
updating.
Printable fabrics are considered to
create a softer, more elegant appearance.
James Carpenter at Doro Tape said: “Soft
signage is increasingly popular in the sign in-
dustry as it offers high quality, photorealistic
images that are both tactile and stylish.”

‘Digi-Fab’ self adhesive fabric can be printed using solvent, eco-solvent, UV and latex inks.
PVC free paint
stencil films
Doro Tape UK Ltd, who supply a popular range of
PVC paint stencil films to signmakers, paint shops
and shop fitters, have introduced three paper alter-
natives that are PVC free.
The new paper stencil films, manufactured by the
German company Regulus, come in three different
types; Standard paper with a medium tack adhesive;
Special paper - similar to the standard paper with
a higher tack adhesive; and a Premium paper,
medium tack adhesive that is resistant against
solvent paints. All the films are easy to weed
and have excellent lay flat properties, which means no
edge curl even after a long drying time. This results in
perfectly crisp edges with residue free removal. It also
allows you to apply several layers at one time, which is
not possible with PVC films.
Paper stencil films are ideal for small letters and
fine shapes, excellent for creating very sharp edges,
and can be recycled.
