Preface
The New Perspectives Series’ critical-thinking, problem-solving approach is the ideal way
to prepare students to transcend point-and-click skills and take advantage of all that
Adobe Dreamweaver CS5 has to offer.
In developing the New Perspectives Series, our goal was to create books that give students
the software concepts and practical skills they need to succeed beyond the classroom. We’ve
updated our proven case-based pedagogy with more practical content to make learning
skills more meaningful to students.
With the New Perspectives Series, students understand why they are learning what they
are learning, and are fully prepared to apply their skills to real-life situations.

SAM: Skills Assessment Manager
SAM is designed to help bring students from the classroom to the real world. It allows stu-
dents to train and test on important computer skills in an active, hands-on environment.
SAM’s easy-to-use system includes powerful interactive exams, training, and projects on the
most commonly used Microsoft Office applications. SAM simulates the Office application
environment, allowing students to demonstrate their knowledge and think through the skills
by performing real-world tasks, such as bolding text or setting up slide transitions. Add in live-
in-the-application projects, and students are on their way to truly learning and applying skills
to business-centric documents.
Designed to be used with the New Perspectives Series, SAM includes handy page references,
so students can print helpful study guides that match the New Perspectives textbooks used in
class. For instructors, SAM also includes robust scheduling and reporting features.

viii New Perspectives Series
System Requirements
This book assumes that students have a default installation of Adobe Dreamweaver CS5, a text
editor, and a current Web browser (preferably Internet Explorer 8 or higher). If students are
using a nonstandard browser, the browser must support XHTML 1.0 or higher. The screen
shots in this book were produced on a computer running Windows 7 Ultimate with Aero
turned on using Internet Explorer 8. If students use a different operating system or browser,
their screens might differ from those in the book. With some Windows servers, the
Dreamweaver built-in FTP client might give continuous or intermittent errors. If these errors
occur, students should double-check the remote and test server configuration settings,
and review the following documents on the Adobe site: http://go.adobe.com/kb/
ts_kb405912_en-us and http://www.adobe.com/go/tn_14841. In Tutorial 7, if you are using a
Windows server, it must have the MIME type set for Flash Video (.flv) or it will not play back
properly. Instructions can be found on the Adobe site at http://www.adobe.com/go/tn_19439
and should be completed by your hosting provider or server administrator. Tutorial 9 requires
students to create or upload a database to a server. This tutorial was written for and tested on
both a Linux server and a Windows server. The recommended server configurations for a
Linux server are Apache 1.3.26 or higher, PHP 5.x or higher, MySQL 5.x or higher, and any
current distribution of Linux. The recommended server configurations for a Windows server
are Windows 2003 IIS 5.0 or higher, running .Net 1.1 framework or higher, and the IIS User
must have write permission for the database directory.
