Newor Little-known Elateridae(Coleoptera)

Abstract Two new speciesand two new subspeciesofelaterid beetles are de-
scribed from Japan and illustrated. They are: Ag1・yp1tlls (Co/a111o,1) kustli1'sp nov.
(subfam. Agrypninae), Hypolit1/lls..111otschulskyl hi・,anol subsp. nov. (subfam. Hyp-
noidinae),i)e,1t1(,cills、,asta1111sp nov.(subfam.Dentico11inae)andAmpedus(Pal,elate・,)
cana/1co//Iss1/1dolasubsp nov.(subfam.Ampedinae).
In thepresent study, I amgoingtodescribe two newspeciesand two newsub-
species of elaterid beetles from Japan. They belong to four different subfamilies,
Agrypninae, Hypnoidinae, Dentico11inaeand Ampedinae. The ho1otypes of each
speciesandsubspeciesdescribedinthispaperarepreservedinthecollectionofthe
NationalScienceMuseum(Nat.Hist),Tokyo.

Male. Length 6.5mm,widthabout2.5mm. Bodyrobust,nearlyparallel-sided
andmoderatelyconvexabove:surfacerathershining,blacktoblackishbrownexcept
for dark brownaroundmarginsof pronotumandelytra; antennae(basalsegment
duskybrown)andlegsmoreor lessreddishbrown;vestiturefulvous,scale-1jkeand
decumbent all over.
Headsubtriangularlydepressedbetweeneyes;surfacedeeplyandcoarselypunc-
tate;clypealmarginobliteratedatmiddle,well-ridgedoverantennal insertjons. An-
tennashort,notattainingtoposteriorangleofpronotum,2ndsegmentsubcylindrica1,
a littlelonger thanitsbreadth,3rdsubclavate,almostaslongas2ndandalittleshorter
than4th, 4thto10th triangularlyserrate(Fig.1B).
Pronotumsubquadrate,widestacrossthemiddle,thenceclearlynarrowedtowards
anteriorangles,subpara11e1-sidedinposteriorhalf,discgentlyconvex,deeply,coarsely

andsomewhat rugoselypunctate,bearingashallowmediansmooth1ongitudina11jne
inposterior half; posterior anglesshort, witheachtippointedposteriorly, but not
truncateobliquely, withoutcarinaabove(Fig. 1C).
Elytraabout l8timesaslongastheirbasalbreadth;sidesweaklyreflexed,grad-
ually dilated backwards at basal third, thence rounded and gradually converging
towardsapiceswhicharenormallyrounded;striaewelldefined,deeply,circularlyand
regularlypunctate; intervalsalittleelevated, irregularlyandrugoselypunctate. Hind
wingsofnormal length,notdegenerated.

ThisnewspeciesiscloselyalliedtoA;grypnus(Co/au/on)hypnicola(KlsH1l,1964)
fromJapan,butcanbedistinguishedfromthelatterbythefollowingpoints:thedjsc
ofpronotumbearingasmoothmedianlongitudinallineinposteriorhalf;theposterior
anglesofpronotumpointedposteriorly,nottruncate.

dusky reddish-brown antennaeand legs; vestitureshort, decumbent and fulvouson

This newsubspeciessomewhat resemblessubsp ta1(・hlkawatOHIRA, 1968, from
Mt. Mitake, west of Tokyo, andsubsp.ohbayashiiOHIRA, l968、fromMt. 0yamain
KanagawaPrefecture,butdiffersfromtheminthefollowingpoints:bodyrobusterand
stouter, with thesidesof pronotumclearlysinuatejust beforeposterior angleswhich
aresharply produced postero-1aterad1elytra1striaedeep, with the intervalselevated
andmoresmoothlyandminutelypunctate.

Male. Length 7.5mm, width about 2mm. Body elongate, almost parallel-
sidedandmoderatelyconvexabove;surfaceshining,entirelyyellowish brownexcept
for darkbrownantennae, most partsof head, basalmarginofpronotum,scutellum,
sutureand2ndand6th to9thintervalsofelytra; legsyellowishbrown;vestiturefine,
erect and paleyellow.
Headdeeplyand triangularlyexcavatedbetweeneyes(Fig 3C);surfacecoarsely
and unevenly punctate1clypeal margin well raised, rounded at middle; nasal area
broad, subrectangular, almost 1/2ashigh as its transversewidth; eyesprominent,
antennaelongate,extendingbeyond posteriorangleof pronotumat least by4apical
segments;basalsegment robustandsubclavate,2ndsubtriangularandalmostaslong
asitswidth,3rd to10thweaklyserrate(Fig 3F).

Pronotumsubquadrate,widestacrossbase,withsidesweaklysinuatejustbehind

Scutellumsubquadrate, punctateandpubescent.
Elytraabout 3 timesas longastheir basal breadth,withsidesalmost parallel in
basal3/4,thenceroundedandgraduallyconvergenttowardsapiceswhichareobtusely
rounded; striae defined, coarsely punctate, intervalselevated, irregularlyand trans-
versely rugose. Legsslender, tarsi andclawssimple. Aedeagusas illustrated(Fig.
3D-E).

exceptforcinnabar-redelytra(moreorlessblackattheapicalportion),antennaeblack,
legsblack,withblackishbrowntarsiand reddishbrownclaws;vestitureblack;pro-
notumusuallybearingafineopalesquelustre.
Thisnewsubspeciescanbedistinguishedfromthenominotypica1subspeciesfrom
Honshubytheshorter andmoreclearlytrapezoidalpronotum, coarser anddenser
puncturesonhead,well-ridgedclypea1margin,andmoreclearlyserrateantennae.

大平仁夫: 日本産コメッキムシ科の新種, XXVIII - 本報告では, 4亜科に属する2新種2新
亜種を記載した.
Agrypnus (Colau1on) kusuii (シマヒメサビキコリ) は, 長崎検疫所の楠井善久氏が, 鹿児島県の
種子島に隣接した馬毛島において採集された離個体である. 一般外形はA. (C・) hypniCola(KISHII,
, 1964) コカ'タヒ .サビキコリに類似しているが, 前胸背板正中部に平滑縦E(cid:0)(cid:10618)(cid:18210)(cid:7031)(cid:18151) 後 角部が切断
状をせず, 上翅の点刻が粗雑で深く印することにより識別できる.
Hypolithusmotschulsky1hiranoi (ハコネミヤマヒサー」コ ツキ) は, 箱根山塊の金時山から, 小
田原市の平野幸7彦氏によって見出された. 体長12mm内外で黒色, 光沢のある個体である. 束京部
御岳山産(subsp tachikawai)や相模大山産(subsp.ohbayashii)のものに比べて, 体が大型で幅広
, く, 前111」,株板wの両側は後角前で顕著に内方へ湾出l 後 角は鋭く後外方へ尖ることによって識別でき
る.
Dentico11is yasumii (ハヤチネベニコ ツキ) は, 岩手県の早池峯山において, 岩手県の高橋泰美

氏により2雄個体が採集された. 同様に青森県岩木町で, 前市の尾崎俊,-i氏が2雄個体を採集され
ている. 体長7~8mmの小型で, ,,褐色~淡黄 色をLた細長い相lである. i貝i 部と前111'j背板の大部
分は暗福色で. 上 には縦の帯状の暗褐色1111を有する.
.4mpedus (Parelater) cana/icouis shidoui (エ・ノムネ ミ ノアー'フコ ノキ) は, 北海道のl:1持町で志
藤宏氏が薪割で見出された. 本州産のものに比へて前月l9,背板力、より1」大で, 頭部の点刻はよりM都1で
密に生じ, 触角の第3節がより顕著に三fl形状をし,:いることなどにより識別できる.
