Abstract A newcave-dwellingspeciesof thechoIevidgenusCatopsisdescribed
fromtheAbukumaHillsofnortheasternHonshuinCentral Japan,underthenameof
Cafopssonelsp nov.
The cave-dwelling cholevid beetle, Catops ohbayashii JEANNEL (1954, p. 40;
SzYMczAKowsKI,l962,pp3-4,figs5-6),hasbeenknowntobelimitedindistribution
tothewesternpartofHonshu,especiallyaroundLakeBiwa-ko. Intheeasternpart
ofHonshu,however,nocavedwellerbelongingtothegenusCatopshasbeenknown
uptothepresent,withtheexceptionofCsparcepunctatusJEANNELratherfrequently
foundincaveslyinginlowmountainareas(e.g.,YosHIDA&NoMuRA,1952).
Recently,onespecimenofaCatopswasfoundbyMr.ShinzaburoSONE,oneof
theenergeticbiospeo1ogists, fromKawauchi-doCavelyingat theeasternfootofMt.
Otakine-yamainthecentralpartoftheAbukumaHills,FukushimaPrefecture.Itwas
submittedtomeforidentificationtogetherwithseveralothercholevidsfromthesame
localitythroughthecourtesyofMr.SumacKAsAHARA.Additionalspecimensofthe
samespecieswereobtainedbythesamebiospeo1ogist fromtwodifferentcavesin the
southernpart oftheAbukumaHills, IbarakiPrefecture,and I wasabletoexamine
themthrough thecourtesyofDr.Shun-IchiUENo. Afteracloseexamination, I have
cometotheconclusionthat theyapparentlybelongtoanewspeciesofthe1ongulus
group(sensuJEANNEL,1936,pp 346-349,andSzYMczAKowsKl,1964,p.154)inthe
genusCatops. In somerespects, it ismorecloselysimilar toC angustipesapica11s
PoRTEvIN (l914, pp 216-217; JEANNEL, 1936, pp 356, 381, fig 850) than to C
ohbayashti. Thenewspecieswillbedescribedinthepresentpaper. Theabbreviations
usedhereinarethesameasthoseexplainedinmypreviouspapers.

Male. Length3.80-4.05mm(innormalcondition),width l.65-1.73mm.Body
elongate,elliptical,withshiny,yellowishbrown,relativelylong,adpressedpubescence;
labrumandmaxillarypalpireddishbrown;mouth-partspaler;headblackishbrown,
withfrontmarginreddish;antennaeclearreddishbrownexcept forsegmentsVII-X
darker; pronotumandscutellumblackishbrown;elytrablackish brown, though the
basalportionsarereddish,entirelybearingopalescent lustre;epipleurareddishbrown;
legsalmostreddishbrown;ventralsurfacedarkreddishbrown,thoughtheapicalhalf
ofeachabdominalsterniteispaler.
Headgentlyconvex,subtrapezoida1,withfrontmarginstraight,widerthanIon9,
widestat thelevelofoccipitalcarina(length:width=ca.1:1.3);labrumtransverse,
subtrapezoida1, well emarginate at the front margin, with sparse punctuations;
maxillarypalpuswithlastsegmentconical,almostaslongastheprecedingone;frons
clothed with puncturessomewhat larger but denser than thoseon labrum; vertex
punctateasonfrons;eyesslightlyreducedbutcompletelyfaceted,moderatelyprom-
inent;horizontaldiameterofeyeabout4/7aslongasthedistancebetweenantennal
socket and occipital carina. Antennae long and slender, reaching about basal
1/7ofelytra;segmentsII-IVequalinlengthtooneanother,VIaslongaswide,VII
andIXequal inwidthtoeachother,VIIItransverse,about17x aswideaston9,XI
elongate,pyriform.Segmentalmeasurements(lengthfollowedbywidth)intheholo-
type as follows:1,0.20,0.10; II,0.15,0.09; III,0.20,0.09;IV,0.15,0.09; V, 0.13,0.10;
vI,0.11,0.11;vIl,0.13,0.14;VIII,0.08,0.l3;IX,0.10,0.14;X,0.11,0.13;XI,0.23,0.13.
Pronotumtransverse,trapezoidal,gentlyconvex,widestat themiddle,withbase
narrowerthanelytra1base,PW/HW151-1.53(MI52),PW/PL140-1.53(M I47);
frontandbasalmarginsalmoststraight,stronglymarginateintheformer; frontangles
rounded;sidesarcuate,gentlymarginate;hindanglesobtuse;surfacedenselyclothed
wjthasperatepunctuations.Scutellumtriangular,punctateasonelytra.Hindwings
full.
Elytraelongate-ovate, gentlyconvex,widest at themiddle, EW/PW1.14-1.17
(M1.16), EL/PL 2.62-2.89 (M2.76), EL/EW 159-1.67 (M I 63); sides arcuate,
stronglyconverging towardsapicesinapicalhalves, theapicesseparately rounded;
discwithsuturecomplete,slightlyangulateat thesuturalend,withsuturalstriaand
tracesof four or fivestriae;surfacegranulate-punctate;microsculpture formedby
shorttransversewrinkles;epipleuraendingataboutapical1/5,punctateasonelytra.
Pygidiumalsopunctateasonelytra.Ventralsurfacealmostasperate-punctate,thou9h
themesosternumispartiallyfoveate,withmicrosculptureformedbyobliquewrinkles.
Legs longandslender,withprofemursmoothonunderside; protibiagently
expanded frombasal t/4alonginnermargin;protarsuswithbasal threesegments
slightlydilated, thefirstone2/3aswideastheapexofprotibia;mesotarsuswiththe

weakly elevated in medic-apical portion, partially foveate, with microsculpture
intricate.Abdominalsternitesnormal,withsterniteVsomewhatdepressedinmiddle,
feeblybisinuateandminutelyprotuberantatthemiddleofapicalmargin,sterniteVI
alsoprotuberantatthesameportionastheprecedingone.Pro-andmesotarsinormal.

Notes. TheparatypespecimenfromKawauchi-doCaveisslightlydifferentfrom
thespecimensofthe typepopulationat thesouthernpart oftheAbukumaHills in
theratioofbodyparts,i.e.,PW/HW142,PW/PL134andEW/PW125.However,
nospecificdifferenceisfoundin theaedeaga1configurationbetween them.
Aswaspointedoutintheintroduction,thepresentnewspeciesiscloselysimilar
toCatopsangustipesapicalisPoRTEvIN,but isclearlydifferent fromthelatter in the
followingpoints:eyesslightly reduced, innermarginofprotarsimoreexpanded in
male,andaedeagusslenderinpreapica1portionwithapexstronglyprojected,though
the apical lobe isshort in lateral view. The newspecies from Ohkaneda-do and
Hanazono-do Caves was taken by baited traps together with C. sparcepunctatus
JEANNEL. The cholevid collection from Kawauchi-do Cave will be reported in
a
separatepaper.

西川正明:阿武隈高地産チビシデムシ属の洞窟性の1新種. - 本州の束北部の洞窟からは, じゅ
うらい,洞窟性のチビシデムシは知られていなかった. しかし, 阿武隈高地の洞窟群のうち, 数ヵ所
の洞窟からもたらされたチビシデムシ属の種のひとつは, 検討の結果, アカアシチビシデムシCatops
anguslipesapicalisPoRTEv1Nに近縁の新種と認められた. そこで, これにアブクマチビシデムシCatops
sonelM.NlsHIKAwA,sp nov.と命名して記載した.
