Preface
This volume contains the proceedings of the third Colloque Medecine et
Recherche organized by the Fondation Ipsen pour la Recherche Therapeutique
and devoted to Alzheimer's disease. After Immunology and Alzheimer's disease
(Angers, September 14,1987) and Genetics and Alzheimer's disease (Paris, March
25,1988), this meeting was dedicated to an other up-to-date, and even futurist,
topic: Neuronal grafting and Alzheimer's disease. It was held in Montpellier, an
historical city, and under the patronage of one of the oldest School of Medicine of
the world.
For the last few months, a large number of experimental works and even of
clinical trials on neuronal grafting have been carried out. As far as clinical studies
are concerned, results remain highly controversial. Most of them concern Parkin
son's disease but for some scientists, neuronal grafting could be a cure for other
neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease (and also Hun
tington's disease) but, at this point, there are only a few experimental data
(perhaps not really related to the disease) on animal models and hypothesis. So the
main aim of the Montpellier's meeting was not, indeed, to give a definitive answer
to these questions.
The following Colloque Mectecine et Recherche of this series was organized in
Toulouse on March 24,1989, and was dedicated to the biological markers of Alz
heimer's disease.
