Bertha P. Dutton is a distinguished anthropologist and expert on the
archaeology and ethnology of Southwestern and Meso-American
Indians. Among her many publications are Sun Father’s Way, The
Pueblo Indian World (with E. L. Hewett), Happy People: The
Huichol Indians, and numerous journal articles and reviews.
Her work in the field has included research projects and excavations
throughout the Southwest and expeditions to Peru, Bolivia,
Ecuador, Panama, Guatemala, and Mexico, as well as attendance at
conferences in South America, Europe, and the Orient.
The New Mexico Press Women presented to Dr. Dutton in 1971 the
coveted Zi'a award for outstanding publications, and in 1974 she
was appointed New Mexico representative to the National Park
Service’s Southwest Regional advisory committee by Secretary of
the Interior Rogers C. B. Morton. She is a Research Associate of the
Museum of New Mexico in Santa Fe; for a decade she served as
Director of the Museum of Navaho Ceremonial Art, Inc., in that
city.
