Preface
Biological and other natural processes have always been a source of inspiration
forcomputerscienceandinformationtechnology.Manyemergingproblemsolving
techniquesandalgorithmsintegrateadvancedevolutionandcooperationstrategies,
encompassinga rangeofspatio-temporalscalesforvisionaryconceptualizationof
informationprocessingandcomputation.
We are very pleased to present the proceedings volume of the V International
Workshop on Nature Inspired Cooperative Strategies for Optimization (NICSO
2011)whichtookplaceinCluj-Napoca,Romania.ThepreviouseditionsofNICSO
wereheldinGranada,Spain(2006),Acireale,Italy(2007),Tenerife,Spain(2008),
andagaininGranadain2010.NICSOevolvedtobeoneofthemostinterestingand
profiled workshops in nature inspired computing. In accordance with the NICSO
tradition,eachsubmissionhasbeenevaluatedinanextensivepeerreviewprocess.
Thetoppapershavefinallybeenselectedfortheinclusioninthisvolume.
TheaimofNICSO2011wastwofold:
• To provide an inspiring environmentfor debating the state of the art ideas and
techniquesinnatureinspiredcooperativestrategies,and
• To offer a comprehensiveimage on the most recentapplicationsof these ideas
andtechniques.
The topics coveredby the NICSO 2011 contributionsinclude Swarm Intelligence
(suchasAntandBeeColonyOptimization),GeneticAlgorithms,MultiAgentSys-
tems,CoevolutionandCooperationstrategies,AdversarialModels,SynergicBuild-
