Preface
The present volume represents substantially my doctoral dissertation, which was
accepted by Duke University in the summer of 2001. Most of the text has
undergone only minor revisions, although Chapters 7 and 8 have received some
additional material.
I wish to acknowledge a number of persons who assisted in the production
of this work. Thanks go first of all to my dissertation supervisor, E. P. Sanders,
for his generous and helpful guidance during its writing. The other members of
my dissertation committee, Richard B. Hays, D. Moody Smith, and Eric Meyers,
also provided welcome support and advice at various stages of its development.
Special thanks are due to Richard Hays, who made the initial recommenda-
tion for publication to the editorial board of BZNW. I am grateful to Prof. Dr.
