PREFACE
The present work is an expansion of part of my doctoral disserta
tion done at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in
1974·
My debts are as uncountable as those of anyone who uses the
Virgilian bibliography. The absence of some important works from
my Bibliography does not mean that I have ignored them: indeed,
many have been at hand constantly in my study of the subject.
The abundant learning in the scholarship of Cartault, Norden, and
R. D. Williams in particular have been of inestimable value. Special
gratitude of a more personal kind must be extended to W. A. Camps
for initial encouragement in the study of Virgil, to Berthe M. Marti
and Kenneth J. Reckford for their careful reading and generous
suggestions that helped me pare down the extensive early drafts
of the dissertation, and to Catherine Castner for her patient as
sistance and support at every stage of the project.
The greatest obligation of all is to my director, Brooks Otis, who
suggested the topic, clarified much that was obscure, and let me
guide this creation home to its present form. It was not the least
of his many special gifts that his titanic wisdom and supreme
humanity were best satisfied when they helped others uncover
answers for themselves, answers in which he never failed to be
interested.
