THE AUTHORS:
JOACHIM ‘JOE’ PUTZ: After schooling in Swakopmund and Windhoek, graduated from the
University of Cape Town with a combined B.A. Hons. (Philosophy and German Literature) in
1972. Worked at various jobs including teaching, film production, photographer and sales
representative selling everything from dog biscuits to diesel engines. Started in journalism at
the German-language daily Die Allgemeine Zeitung (1978) becoming its Acting Editor in 1979.
Won the Journalist of the Year award in 1981. Wrote and published three books on Namibia in
German. Worked for the South African Press Association (SAPA) and still works as stringer for
the Deutsche Presse Agentur (DPA). Became Editor of The Windhoek Advertiser in 1985 and
resigned with four fellow staff members in September 1986. Co-author of the “Political Who’s
Who of Namibia (Volume 1)", 1986-87. Editor of the weekly Namibia Nachrichten( 1988-1989).
Currently co-owner with Heidi von Egidy of Dateline Media Centre.
HEIDI VON EGIDY: After schooling in Windhoek, graduated from the University of Cape Town
with majors in History, African Economic History and African Politics. Sub-Editor of the Wind¬
hoek Advertiser until resigning with four colleagues in September 1986. Co-author of the
“Political Who's Who of Namibia”, 1986-1987. Worked for The Windhoek Observer and Die
Namibia Nachrichten until going freelance in 1988. Stringer for Capital Radio (1988), the As¬
sociated Press (AP) and ARD German Television. Currently co-owner with Joe Putz of
Dateline Media Centre.
PERRI CAP LAN: Attended school in Johannesburg and Jerusalem, and studied at the Bezalel
Academy of Art and Design, Jerusalem. Came to Namibia in 1982 and worked as Arts and
Features Editor on The Windhoek Advertiser until resigning in September 1986 with four
colleagues. Co-author of the “Political Who's Who of Namibia (Volume 1)”, 1986-87. Currently
employed with the NAMLAW Project, a legal research organization, in Windhoek.
