Multiphysicsproblemsareusuallyencounteredwhenthebehaviourofasystemis
affectedbyseveralphysicalphenomena.Theinteractionbetweenthesephenomena
leads to a completely different behaviour than the one resulting if each physical
phenomenonwouldbetreatedseparatelyfromtheothers.Inrecentyears,studying
multiphysicssystemshasbecomeahotresearchfieldandhasattractedresearchers
fromdifferentareas.
ThisbookistheproceedingsofMMSSD2014(MultiphysicsModellingandSim-
ulationforSystemsDesignandMonitoring)whichwasheldonDecember17–19,
2014,inSousse,Tunisia.Thefirsteditionoftheconferenceattractedabout140par-
ticipantswhohadtheopportunitytodiscussanumberofimportanttopicsinthefield
ofmultiphysicsmodellingandsimulation,andestablishimportantcollaborations.A
few chaptersin thisbook are devotedto modelingand simulation of multiphysics
systems.Theydescribesseveralkindofinteractions,suchasthermomechanicaland
electromechanicalinteractions,fluid-structureinteractions,acoustic-structureinter-
actions,andthermofluidicinteractions.Specificcontributionsdealwithmechatronic
design and their applications, for example, in the field of energy harvesting or in
robotics.Other contributionsdescribe advancesin systems engineering,mainly in
the area of complex systems design. They reports on the implementation of ad-
vancednumericalandanalyticalsimulationmethods,andincludecasestudies.An-
other topic is concerning with material characterization of multiphysics systems.
Thecorrespondingchaptersdiscussseveralstructuralapplications,givingaspecial
emphasistotheanalysisofmaterialbehavior.
Afewotherchapterscovermonitoringmethodsofmultiphysicssystems.Failure
characterizationandfaultsidentificationrepresentthemostly-discussedsubjectsin
thissection.

But, what is the future of multiphysicssystems? After three days of lively dis-
cussion all the participants concurred on the necessity of increasing the level of
collaboration between researchersand professionalswith differentexpertise. This
synergyisfundamentaltodealwiththeincreasingcomplexityoffuturesystems.
