Thesearetheproceedingsofthe9thGermanConferenceonMulti-AgentSystem
Technologies (MATES 2011). The MATES conference series provides an inter-
disciplinaryforumforresearchers,users,anddevelopersofintelligentagentsand
multi-agentsystems,topresentanddiscussthelatestadvancesofresearchinthe
field,aswellasprototypedorfieldedsystems.Itaimsatcoveringthewholerange
of agent and multi-agent technologies, promoting both theory and applications.
MATES2011tookplaceduringOctober6–7,2011,inBerlin.Buildingonthe
success of the eight previous editions of MATES since 2003, MATES 2011 was
co-locatedwithtwomajorevents:INFORMATIK2011,the41stAnnualConfer-
enceofthe‘Gesellschaftfu¨rInformatike.V.’(GI),andKI2011,the34thAnnual
German Conference on Artificial Intelligence. This was the second time that a
co-locationwiththemainGermanComputerScienceconferencewassought;yet
itturnedouttobeparticularlyinterestingasthefocusthemeofINFORMATIK
was “communities” – a topic strongly related to multi-agent systems research.
The appropriate design of truly open systems as artificial communities consti-
tutedoneofthecoretopicsoftheMATES2011conference,withsolutionsbased
ontheexplicittreatmentofagreementsandagreementprocessesaswellasagent
organizations and self-organizing multi-agent systems.
With the support of the InternationalProgramCommittee of MATES 2011,
outof 50 submissions fromalloverthe world,we accepted12 as full papers and
6 as short papers, yielding an acceptance ratio of 24% for full papers and 36%
for all conference papers. To outline the relevance of research into organization
and organizational structures for open multi-agent systems, our program in-
cluded presentationsby two distinguished invited speakers,Olivier Boissier and
Hartmut Schmeck, covering the range from organization-orientedprogramming
to self-organizing multi-agent systems. Together with the KI 2011 conference,
a Doctoral Consortium was organized by Ren´e Schumann including a panel on
researchand quality.
Finally,asConferenceChairswewouldliketothanktheauthorsofsubmitted
papers and the invited speakers for their contributions; the members of the
ProgramCommitteeaswellastheadditionalreviewersfortheircareful,critical,
and thoughtful reviews; and the local conference organizers and their team for
their help and support in making MATES 2011 a success.
We hope the attendees enjoyedMATES 2011 and the co-locatedconferences
in Berlin, both scientifically and socially, and will continue to support MATES
as a conference series with many more successful events to come in the future.

Abstract. Socialandorganizationalaspectsofagencyhavebecomeamajoris-
sue in the Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) domain. Recent applications of MAS
on Web and Ambient Computing enforce the need of using these dimensions
intheprogrammingofMAS.Theaimistoensurethegovernanceofsuchsys-
temswhilepreservingtheirdecentralizationandopenness.Inthistalk,wepresent
how multi-agent organisations provide software abstractions, models and tools
that contribute to this aim. We focus on the MOISE framework that we have
developped during these last years. This framework proposes an organisation
programminglanguagefordefiningmulti-agentorganisations,thataremanaged
and supported by organisational artifacts at the system programming level and
by organisation-awareness mechanisms at the agent programming level. This
frameworkisincludedintheJaCaMoplatform,integrationofJasonAgentPro-
grammingLanguage,CarTaGoenvironmentplatformandMOISE.Weillustrate
differentfeaturesofOrganisationOrientedProgrammingofMASusingdifferent
applicationexamples.Wewillhighlightalsohowitintegratesinabroader per-
spectiveofmulti-agentorientedprogrammingofdecentralizedandopensystems.
