FIU implemented two strategies - the Learning Assistant model and Open Source Tutorials. For Open Source Tutorials, research-based worksheets were used to foster conceptual learning in small groups. Data showed students in transformed laboratories had higher gains on the Force Concept Inventory than those in traditional labs, indicating the reforms improved conceptual understanding. The reforms were also institutionalized through ongoing funding and staffing, making them sustainable and able to influence more students and faculty over time.
