Dr Mary McMurran is Senior Baxter Research Fellow in the School of Psycho-
logy, Cardiff University, UK, and is funded by the Department of Health’s Na-
tionalProgrammeforForensicMentalHealthResearchandDevelopment.Sheis
bothaCharteredClinicalPsychologistandaCharteredForensicPsychologist,and
isaFellowoftheBritishPsychologicalSociety.Shehasworkedwithoffendersin
ayoungoffender’scentre,amaximumsecuritypsychiatrichospital,aregionalse-
cureunit,andinthecommunity.Overtheyears,shehastakenaparticularinterest
inalcoholandcrime,atopiconwhichshehaspublishedwidely,andinthetreat-
ment of personality disordered offenders. She is the author of several structured
treatmentprogrammesforsuchoffenders,andthesearenowwidelyusedinthe
UK.SheisaformerChairoftheBritishPsychologicalSociety’sDivisionofCrimi-
nological and Legal Psychology (now the Division of Forensic Psychology), and
foundingeditorofthejournalLegalandCriminologicalPsychology.
