None of what follows in the rest of the pages of this book would have been pos-
sible without the love and support of my family, Beata, Kian and Nieve. They are
everything to me, and they gave me everything I needed to write this. Beata was
there for me on the first iteration of this work in my dissertation, and along the
way we were joined by Kian and Nieve. Whether it has been Beata’s constant love,
support and cuddles, Kian’s energy and giggles or Nieve’s smiles and wriggles, I
couldn’t have written this without them and I am so very glad that they were here
with me throughout.
Artemis Alexiadou deserves most of the credit (and none of the blame) for
the appearance of this book, and I would like to thank her for offering me the
opportunity, and the push, to publish it in this form. When I completed my PhD.
in 2015, aside from publishing the bits of it I planned to, I swore I’d never look
at the damn thing as a whole again. I happily kept this vow for three years, until
Artemis emailed me in mid-2018 asking whether I was interested in writing a book
based on my dissertation to bring all the work together. Apparently catching me
in a good mood, I agreed, and what follows is the result. Artemis has always been
supportive of my work and has patiently waited for delivery of this manuscript and
so I am very grateful to her for her role in all of this and it has been a pleasure to
work with her in this way. I would also like to thank at De Gruyter Kirstin Boergen,
Michaela Göbels, Lara Wysong, Jana Habermann and especially Birgit Sievert, and
Charlotte Webster for great help with putting together the final version.
In terms of content, I remain deeply indebted to the role that Susi Wurmbrand
and Jonathan Bobaljik played in developing the content here. They were my su-
pervisors at the University of Connecticut where I wrote the thesis that this de-
veloped from, and their hard work and guidance helped turn my ideas into the
form that they are in now. Željko Bošković and Jon Gajewski also deserve thanks
as associate supervisors. Various other people have helped shape the content into
what it is now in the years since my thesis, including (in no particular order, aside
