Giulio Cesare Vanini fu giustiziato per ateismo a Tolosa il 9 febbraio 1619. Diciannove anni dopo Giordano Bruno. Gli strapparono la lingua, lo impiccarono alla forca e infine lo bruciarono sul rogo. La sua figura, tornata in auge mezzo secolo fa, ha goduto in passato di una grande popolarità. Di lui si è detto di tutto, nel bene e nel male. Anche che fosse l’Anticristo. In realtà fu solo un filosofo. Un filosofo “più facile da bruciare che da confutare” (A. Schopenhauer).
