PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION
At the 1984 Convention of the Montana Library Association,
the Indexing Special Interest Group was born. The main purposes
of this group are to enable librarians and others engaged in all
types of indexing endeavors to share their knowledge and
experiences and to establish a degree of coordination among the
diverse indexing projects throughout the state. In 1991 this
committee has expanded to become the Local History and Indexing
Special Interest Group.
The Committee decided that an ideal first task would be to
compile a comprehensive list of every newspaper, vital records,
local history and cemetery indexing project that had been done or
is ongoing in the state. The first edition of this book appeared
in 1987 and is entitled The Montana Historical and Genealogical
Data Index It was based on the responses received from a survey
from which.the Committee sent to every library, genealogical
society, historical group, newspaper, and some individuals
engaged in some type of indexing.
This updated index is the result of a survey undertaken in
1991. The book owes its existence to those who took the time to
complete and return the questionnaire. It contains 46 additional
entries describing projects not covered in the first edition.
The Committee owes a debt of gratitude to the Montana Library
Association for their continued financial support. Vie would also
like to thank Vaun Stevens and Andrew Cherullo for their help in
the preparation of this publication.

or transcribing of records not listed here, please take the time
to fill out the questionnaire, a copy of which can be found on
the final page of this book (it may be photocopied). If you need
help in starting your first project, please write to us as we
would be happy to help you.
Finally, in requesting information from the libraries and
other groups listed in the Montana Data Index be sure to include
,
a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE). With library budgets
severely limited, many cannot afford such postage costs.
