Description and Ranking of Montana
Montanaisalai^e, sparsely-populatedstatewithaneconomythat hastraditionallyde-
pended onnatural resource-linked industries. Theopenplains ofCentral and Eastern
Montanaprovide landforgrain farming, grazingforlarge herds ofbeefcattle, oil and gas
fields, and richcoaldeposits. Themountainous regionsofWesternMontanayieldtimberfor
woodproduasmanufacturingandmineralsformining. Recentyears, however, haveseenthe
state relyinglesson itsnatural resources, and branchingout intoamorediversifiedeconomy.
Manymoreservice-producingjobs (consistingofboth high andlow wagejobs) are being
addedto Montana'seconomythan aregoods-producingjobs. Tourism isbecomingmore
important tothestate'seconomy; andincreased numbersofpeople are movingintothe
state, some ofthem retirees.
Basicindustries (economicsectorsthatbring moneyinfromtheoutside) partiallydeter-
minethedireaionofastateorlocaleconomy. Montana'sbasicindustriesincludemanufac-
turing, federalgovernment, agriculture,tourist-related, mining, railroadsandheavyconstruc-
tion. Serviceindustrieshavebecomeincreasinglyimportant inMontanaalso, andMontana's
majorserviceindustriesincludewholesale/retailtrade,education,healthservicesandgov-
ernment.
Smallbusinessesareveryimportantto Montana'seconomy. Recentcoveredemployment
datashowsthat about 42percent ofthestate'swage andsalaryjobs are with firmsemploy-
ingfewerthan 20people—andabout 75 percentarewithbusinessesemployingfewerthan
100people.
