EDITOR'S PREFACE
This volume, the seventh in the Modern Perspectives Series, corrects an
imbalance; the link between surgery and psychiatry is not as strong as that
between internal medicine and psychiatry. This imbalance arose as an
artefact in the history of medicine. From the seventeenth century onwards,
psychiatry became neuro-psychiatry and attached itself to internal medi
cine. It became traditional to emphasize the links between internal
medicine and psychiatry. But two-thirds of patients in the beds of a
general hospital and in its out-patient department are suffering from
surgical conditions. Psychiatry has as strong an involvement with these
conditions as with those of internal medicine. The truth of this is dem
onstrated by the contributions here which span all the general body
systems.
If the editor of this series could have indulged a wish, it was to
edit a book on the psychiatry of surgery. The pleasure of its planning
and execution has been enhanced by the response of the contributors.
May it be a contribution towards the birth of surgeon psychiatrists, sur
geons encompassing psychic as well as surgical diagnoses, perceptive of
the psychic significance of operative surgery and with an holistic ap
proach to management procedures grounded in the understanding of
psychic as well as of somatic pathology in their patients. May this volume
also help towards a greater interaction between the surgical and the
psychiatric departments in hospitals.
This book fits into the general aim of the Modern Perspectives Series
to bring meaningful new material to the attention of its readership at as
early a stage as possible. The Series is not a text book: it concentrates
mostly on areas of progress. However, the accumulated material, with its
distinguished contributors from all parts of the world, makes it a unique
international encyclopedia in psychiatry. The international flavor of the
Series is emphasized in this volume by contributions from Australia, Can-

ada, Greece, Holland, Israel, U.K., U.S.A., U.S.S.R. and West Germany.
Elsewhere in the Series readers of this volume will find related ma
terial. Attention is drawn to the Cumulative Indexes in Volume 5.
Volume 5 can also be regarded as a companion volume to this volume
in that it covers all aspects of the psychiatry of childbirth, making it
unnecessary to include that field here. Surgical material elsewhere in
cludes "disorders of speech in childhood" and "accident proneness" in
Volume 1; "corporeal awareness," "the phenomena of hypnosis," "sensory
deprivation," "hallucinations" and "the placebo response" in Volume 2;
"the child's hazards in utero," "peptic ulcers in children," and "the man·
agement of ulcerative colitis in childhood" in Volume 3; "the range of
psychosomatic disorders in adolescence" in Volume 4; and "psycho
somatic states" and "facing death" in Volume 6.
It is a pleasure to record my gratitude to the contributors for a high
standard of presentation and a ready awareness of the problems of edit
