A Modern Approach…
When I first began scrapbooking, I went to my basement and pulled out a few boxes of photos that had been sitting
there for what seemed like forever. I organized them one by one in chronological order, and then began the heavy task
of scrapping all of them…in order. At some point it dawned on me that this wasn’t fun. My pages were uninspired and
portrayed nothing more than if I had just shoved them into a pre-made photo album.
That’s when I realized family is not about names and dates, memories are not chronological and my artistic expres-
sion was just as important to the page as the photo itself. So I started over. I began again with a new goal—to scrap my
family’s stories, to scrap my family’s personalities and to scrap my family’s traditions. My heritage comprises more than
mundane details like names, dates and numbers, and so does yours.
It’s the quirky everyday moments, memories and personalities, like an old song by Jim Reeves or homemade ice cream
hand-cranked in a wooden barrel, that make our families unique and interesting. I challenge you to scrap your family’s
stories, personalities and traditions in a way that inspires you. Toss the rules of heritage scrapbooking out the window
and begin again fresh. Look to the amazing examples in the pages that follow for inspiration on new ways to keep your
family memories rich and colorful.

Telling Your Family’s Story
As I’m sitting here writing this, I’m watching Casablanca, my all-time favorite film. If you haven’t seen it, go now. (Yes,
I’m giving you permission to put down the book, but only for a moment!) I’m sitting with a cup of tea, my journal and
a good pen, pondering what it is that makes this movie so classic. Is it the image of Humphrey Bogart smoking his
cigarette? Is it Ingrid Bergman’s arresting beauty? Is it nostalgia for another time? These things are important details,
but the real reason Casablanca has become a classic for me is that it captures the personal side of a piece of the
world’s history, an amazing story of living and loving in a time of political turmoil. It gets right to the root of the
characters and their relationships. This is what you should try to accomplish with your heritage pages and albums.
The things that make your family special are not lists of places, names and dates. The things that make your family
memorable are the irreplaceable recipes your grandmother has passed down since the Great War, the story your
grandfather tells about when he escaped across the border, that opal pendant that’s been worn by every generation
of women in your family since the 1700s. Your family’s personality is in the details. It is up to you to find them.
Find the stories in your family history and capture them on your page. This is the essence of who you are.
This is the essence of who your children will be. Live it, document it and love it.
