PREFACE
TH> purpose of this book is to present in simple form thé
requisite essentials of French grammar and vocabulary, and
to impart a knowledge of French institutions, customs, history,
and literature.
The plan of using the book depends on the programme of
the school. In most Secondary Schools, the first thirty-five
lessons may be covered in one year. If Instructors so desire,
two full years may be devoted to the fifty lessons of theFirst
Part. This will permit a certain amount of supplementary
reading.
The remaining lessons of the grammar may be otfVered in
the third year, supplemented «with an appropriate reading
text." '
Attention should be called to the fact that the commoner
forms and the elementary uses of the present subjunctive
are presented as simply as possible1 in Lesson XXXVI. litis
lesson may be taken in its regular position or it may be '
postponed till later, according ta the programme that is
adopted. The lessens that follow are so arranged that the
omission of Lesson XXXVI would not cause any ineonven-
ienoe. Hie subjunctive mood is- treated more fuHy in the '
first lessons of the Second Part.
The reading material , is made the basis of all grammatical
instruction. Numerous examples, derived from the reading,
illustrate the rules.
The First Part of the grammar contains fifteeir full-page
illustrations, including the facsimiles of Heath's Modern Lap-'
gmge Wall Charts, which depict daily life and are used aé.à
basis for Direct-Method work. There is ample opportunity

for the development of additional questions aod answers
relating to these illustrations.
After each aeries of five lessons, in-the First Part, a
thorough review sums up thé work of the series with a com-
plete set of Direct-Method exercises.
: A special topic of cultural value closes each series with a
Lecture. This may serve as material for discussion and for
free composition. Attention is called also to the simplified
account of the life and deeds bf Jeanne d'Arc which furnishes
the reading material for sixteen lessons in the First Part.
In the Second Flat of the book the /student is made ac-
quainted with outstanding personages, in the realm of French
literature, fajtbuy, art, »nd science.
The vocabulary i> strictly limited to French words and
«qpescÛM» that are ^n common use.
The modem French nomenclature for verb forms has
been idopted, such as passé composé instead of pané mitjffni,
patU simple instead of passé défini, but the other names
temj be tiaed if the teacher profess them.
1W prinoiptel parts of the verb are a mere mechanical oon-
trivance and not a scientific device. For practical purposes
more stress has been laid on the formation of tenses from the
present indicative.
Obsolete rules, such as the omission of pat after savoir, the-
use of the expletive ne, etc., are either omitted or are given
in the Second Part as usages appertaining to formal style,'!
The one exception is the use of the paué simple (passé défini)*
which, although no kmgtor used in ordinary speech, occurs
frequently as literary form.
The main reforms adopted by the Minister of Public In-
struction in February 1901 have been adhered to, such «s
