Preface
The 3rd International Conference on Modern Bamboo Structures (ICBS-2018) was held in
Beijing,China,June25-17,2018,followingtheprevioussuccessfuleventsinChangsha,China,
2007, and in Bogota, Columbia, 2009, and several subsequent workshops. The 3-ICBS-2018
was organized as an important thematic event of the 2018 Global Bamboo and Rattan Con-
gress (BARC 2018 http://www.barc2018.org/en), aiming at providing an open forum for
expertsaroundtheworldtoexchangeinformationandtodiscusstopicsrelatedtodesign,ana-
lysis,testing,manufacture,constructionandeducationofmodernbamboostructures.
Theconferencefeaturedninepresentationsessions,paneldiscussions,exhibitions,etc.,and
was attended by more than 200 participants, representing a wide spectrum of professions
including academia, architecture, engineering, manufacture, government, as well as NGOs.
After the conference, the authors are solicited to submit their papers and more than twenty
papersareselectedtobepublishedintheICBS-2018Proceedings,afterapeerreviewprocess.

Dr.Y.XiaoisDistinguishedProfessor,ProgramDirectorforEnergy,EnvironmentandInfra-
structure Sciences, in the Zhejiang University – University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign
Institute(ZJUI),ZhejiangUniversityInternationalCampusinHaining,China.Hisacademic
careerspansinJapan,USandChina.HeservesastheassociateeditorfortheASCEJournal
of Structural Engineering, Journal of Bridge Engineering, and editorialboard memberof the
Journal of Constructional Steel Research. He is elected fellows of the American Society of
Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the American Concrete Institute (ACI). Passionate about
bamboo,Dr.Xiaofocusesandpublishespioneeredresearchonengineeredbambooandholds
manypatents andthe trademark technologyGluBam®. In 2008, hewas awardedthe Bestof
What’sNewin2008bythePopularScienceMagazine,andwasnamedasthePopularScience
Innovator of 2008. Prof. Xiao’s team has designed and built many demonstration bamboo
housesandbridgesinChinaandAfrica.
Dr.Z.Ligraduatedincivilengineeringin2009fromtheSouthwestJiaotongUniversity,then
wasenrolledinmaster/doctoralcoursesattheHunanUniversity.Asanexchangestudent,he
pursueddoctoralcoursesattheSapienzaUniversityofRome,throughErasmusproject(Eur-
asianUniversityNetworkforInternationalCooperationinEarthquakes),andobtainedaPh.
D.degreetherein2015.FromFeb.2015toJune2016,heworkedasapostdoctoralresearcher
atSapienzaUniversityofRome.Heisnowonthefacultyasanassistantprofessorincollege
of civil engineering, Nanjing Tech University. Since 2009, he has been working on modern
bamboo structures and has published more than 12 international journal papers related to
thistopic.
Mrs. K.W. Liu is the Coordinator of Global Bamboo Construction Programme at the Inter-
nationalBambooandRattanOrganisation(INBAR–www.inbar.int),basedatitsHeadquar-
ters in Beijing, China. Mrs. Liu has managed more than 10 international bamboo
construction projects across Asia, Africaand Latin American inthe last 10 years. Sheis also
one of the founders of INBAR Construction Task Force (INBAR TFC) and currently man-
agesagroupof28bambooconstructionexpertsfrom18countries.AstheConvenorofISO/
TC165(TimberStructures)WorkingGroup(WG)12–StructuralUsesofBamboo,Mrs.Liu
is leading the development and revision of several international and Chinese standards for
bambooconstruction.Mrs.Liuisoneofexpertsof“TimberandBambooStructuresCommit-
tee”andamemberof“SustainableCivilEngineeringCommittee”organizedbyChineseSoci-
etyforUrbanStudiesinChina.Asthefirstauthor,shepublishedthebookonContemporary
Bamboo Architecturein China.She also translated into Chinese the book Sustainable Build-
inginPractice:WhattheUsersThinkwrittenbyGeorgeBaird,publishedbyChinaArchitec-
ture&BuildingPressin2019and2013respectively.
