Een docent, professor Hortenso, de verzetsheld Ha Lucio en enkele van zijn vrienden zijn vol bewondering voor de revolutionaire geschriften van zijn vader, Antonio Samson, hoofdpersoon in het eerder in deze reeds verschenen "Maskerade". Dit betekent dat Pepe steeds weer wordt geconfronteerd met deze man, jegens wie hij een hevige wrok koestert, omdat deze zijn moeder in de steek zou hebben gelaten.<br>Toch belandt Pepe ongewild meer en meer in het spoor van zijn vader door de ervaringen die hij opdoet in Manila en vooral door de dood van zijn vriend Toto, die bij een protestmars wordt neergeschoten.<br>En ondanks zijn verlangen naar een rustig en prettig leven en zijn afkeer van revolutionaire leuzen en idealistische betogen wordt hij gegrepen door de geest van de revolutie.<br>In tegenstelling tot zijn vader, de weinig daadkrachtige ideoloog, trekt Pepe de uiterste consequenties van zijn keuze, die hem uitiendelijk een weg doen inslaan waarna, zoals hij zelf weet, geen terugkeer meer mogelijk is.</p></br></br></br>
