Rafael Barrett (Rafael Ángel Jorge Julián Barrett y Álvarez de Toledo) (1876-1910), fue un escritor Español, naturalizado en Paraguay; lugar donde produjo la gran mayoría de sus obras. «Mirando Vivir» es una recopilación de sus pensamientos y opiniones sobre hechos, personajes y modas relevantes a principios del siglo XX. Escrita con el estilo crudo e irónico que es característico de Barrett, esta obra resulta excelente instrumento no sólo para conocer la realidad de la época, desde el punto de vista de un pensador con inclinación anarquista y socialista; sino también para tener como referencia al estudiar los orígenes de los grandes acontecimientos que marcaron ese siglo. Sobre esta obra, Jorge Luis Borges escribió en una carta a su amigo Roberto Godel: «Ya que tratamos temas literarios te pregunto si no conoces un gran escritor argentino, Rafael Barrett, espíritu libre y audaz. Con lágrimas en los ojos y de rodillas te ruego que cuando tengas un nacional o dos que gastar, vayas derecho a lo de Mendesky o a cualquier librería y le pidas al dependiente que te salga al encuentro un ejemplar de Mirando Vivir de este autor. Creo que ha sido publicado en Montevideo este libro. Es un libro genial cuya lectura me ha consolado de las ñoñerías de Giusti, Soiza O’Reilly y de mi primo Alvarito Melián Lafinur».
