The Milwaukee Numismatic Society, founded in 1934, is the oldest and largest organization in
Milwaukee devoted to the study of money. Meetings are held at 7:00 PM on the third Thursday of
each month in the Community Room on the lower level of Mayfair Mail (W. North A venue at N.
Mayfair Road). Our annual coin show is held in October.
January Coin of the Month: This month we are offering a very attractive set of state quarters of the 13 original
colonies, mounted in a deluxe Littleton folder. The coins (face value S3.25) are BU (brilliant uncirculated) and most
are pristine. The opening bid for this beautiful set is only S10.
January 2017 MNS President's Message
After a great deal of anticipation and build up, the 2016 holiday season and calendar of events is
finally behind us. It seems like so much work and effort goes into the planning and preparation of the
holidays and then in the blink of an eye it is all over. We can now take a much needed deep breath and
look ahead to the year ahead, both numismatically and personally to a fresh start and new beginnings.
Our club's holiday party was once again a wonderful festive occasion to socialize and enjoy each
other's company. Thanks to everyone who brought a beverage or dish to pass. Finding the first winner of
the Bingo game was a prolonged effort but once one was called many other winners began to follow. I
hope that all the winners enjoy their prizes and thanks again to Dave H. for bringing them.
Please look at the newly updated club calendar for 2017. As you can see I changed the date of
the CSNS show bus trip to Thursday, April 27. I will make arrangements for the coach bus reservations,
and we can open up attendance to members of the South Shore Coin Club and any other interested
individuals for a nominal fee.
In the last newsletter I neglected to mention scholarships the club makes available for the ANA
summer seminar in Colorado Springs. Please consider applying soon as the Board will need to review the
applications. The club offers both a full and partial scholarship to attend the seminar for those
applications that qualify. More will be discussed about this at the next meeting and applications will be
posted online at our website. More information on the seminar can be found online at
https://www. monev.org/summer-seminar.
At the January meeting we will conduct inductions of the newly elected officers as voted upon at
the December meeting. Please pay your dues and be sure to receive a new membership card.
Thanks for reading and I look forward to seeing many of you at the first meeting of 2017!
Happy Collecting,
Justin J. Perrault

Schimel drops $10,000 on commemorative coins
By Daniel Bice, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Jan. 7, 2017
Attorney General Brad Schimel is really proud of the motto he coined for his agency: "Kicking Ass Every Day"
or KAED, as he likes to sign off his emails to staff. So impressed is Schimel with his mildly crude, get-tough motto that he
ordered 2,000 challenge coins with the acronym on them. The 1.75-inch gold-plated brass souvenirs read "Wisconsin
Attorney General Brad D. Schimel" on one side and "Wisconsin Department of Justice: K.A.E.D." on the other. The state
seal appears on the medallions.
Records show the state Department of Justice paid nearly $10,000 in taxpayer dollars—$4.75 each, plus other
costs—to Lexington Metal Products Corp. in Lithia, Fla., for two shipments of the commemorative coins, which they
received over the past 1.5 years. Schimel, a first-term Republican, announced recently that he is running for a second term.
A Schimel aide initially declined to answer questions about the coins. "Your story is trivial and not a high priority
for our communications shop at the moment," Schimel spokesman Johnny Koremenos said via email on Friday. "I’ll get
back to you as soon as I can." Must not be Sunshine Week yet in Schimel's office. Anyway, it was an odd expenditure by
an official who is often complaining about his lack of funds. In 2015, Schimel asked for more cash so he could hire more
staff to investigate officer-involved shootings around the state. More recently, the attorney general requested more funds in
the next budget for officer training, prosecuting internet crimes against children and operating treatment alternatives and
diversion programs.
In a followup email, Koremenos said challenge coins are common in military and law enforcement communities as
a way to build team unity, reward achievement and boost morale. He said many others, including Attorney General J.B.
Van Hollen, have purchased and distributed such souvenirs. Patrick Reilly, president of Lexington Metal Products, wouldn't
say how many government agencies have used real tax dollars to have his company mint fake coins. "We get requests from
all kinds of people," said Reilly, a retired New York City cop and lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Marines. "We never
question where it's coming from."
Then-Gov. Scott McCallum caused quite an uproar in 2001 by spending $850 for silver-colored coins bearing his
name and image for distribution to Capitol visitors. But the motto on Schimel's coin makes his unique.
"The acronym KAED is the motto the AG gave the agency after taking office," Koremenos said. "It does stand for
Kicking Ass Every Day, which is the attorney general's challenge to the team at DOJ and recognition of the amazing work
done for the citizens of Wisconsin every day." For the most part, Schimel has given out the token to high-achieving Justice
Department employees and local police as well as speakers at conferences sponsored by the attorney general.
But the coins aren't available to the general public, even if the money for them came from the state budget for
the Division of Law Enforcement Services in DOJ. Koremenos rejected a request for one of Schimel's kick-ass coins. 1
even offered to cover the $5 cost. "The coins are not available for purchase," Koremenos said. ###

Fantasy Numismatics 2016

Year End Results
This year we had eleven (11) participants.
Only four (4) ended up with positive portfolios, and
seven (7) had negative results. While no participants broke even
as many have in past years.
This was a very different year as many key date collector coins decreased in value, along
with many Silver Dollars, both Trade and Morgan type. These categories are commonly
selected every year with mixed results. Another surprise to me was the overall decrease
with early copper cents and half cents. I had all of my eggs in that basket this year and lost
big on every coin selected. This was the year of extremes both ways, positive and negative.
We had some record losses and a record increase on one selected coin that went from
$8,300.00 in 2016 to a whopping $23,000.00 in 2017! A $14,700.00 increase, chosen by
our Fantasy Winner this year. The coin was a 1799/98 Draped Bust Dollar with 15 star
reverse. Below is an example of that coin type without the over-date. We also had one coin
that dropped $8,000.00 - wow, and that was a Carson City minted Trade Dollar in MS63!
I'm glad I don't have that coin in my safety deposit box!

FYI to all participants—one of the hazards of doing the Fantasy Numi game is that
our bets are only as good as the accuracy of the catalog values. Unfortunately we
have noted some errors noted in the catalog especially with Morgan dollars
,
Hopefully, we have the correct pages for members to follow.

Milwaukee Numismatic Society’s
Fantasy Numismatics 2017
(By Bruce Benoit)
The concept:
Did you ever want to make a substantial coin purchase for investment purposes, but the only thing stopping
you was your available funds to invest? This fun and educational program will enable you to spend up to
S25.000.00 in lantasy dollars on coins, and after a year’s time you will find out how you did with the
selections you made in your coin investment portfolio. Participants will select coins that they feel will
increase in price better than others. This is a fun way to learn how you would do if you had the guts and funds
to actually do it, and the challenge of competing against your numismatic buddies.
Rules:
1. All portfolio selections must be only regular issue coins produced by the U.S. Mint, and be listed in
the January 2017 issue of Coin’s magazine. (NO COMMEMS, SETS or BULLION)
2. You can select up to ten (10) coins, in any listed grade you would like.
3. You cannot exceed the $25,000.00 limit.
4. You cannot change your portfolio during the year’s time.
5. Portfolios will be added up using the January 2018 issue of Coin's magazine.
I o participate, use the January 2017 issue of Coin’s magazine price list and portfolio form to select the coins
you would like to invest in. Be sure to turn in your portfolio prior to the deadline of 9:00 P.M. (end of the
March meeting) 2017. Portfolios can be given to Leon Saryan to forward to me. You can track your portfolio
results with each issue by subscribing to Coin’s magazine. Prizes will be awarded to the top performers at the
years end, and they will have bragging rights all year!
