The National Academy of Sciennces was esttablished in 1863 by an AAct of Congress, signed by
President Lincoln, ass a private, nongovernmmental instittution to advvise the natiion on issuess
related tto science annd technology. Memberrs are electeed by their ppeers for outtstanding
contributtions to reseearch. Dr. Raalph J. Ciceerone is pressident.

The National Academy of Enginneering was establishedd in 1964 undder the charrter of the
National Academy off Sciences too bring the ppractices of engineeringg to advisingg the nation.
Memberss are electedd by their peeers for extrraordinary ccontributionss to engineeering. Dr. C. D.
Mote, Jr.., is president.

The National Academy of Mediccine (formerly the Instittute of Medicine) was eestablished iin
1970 undder the charter of the National Acaddemy of Scieences to advvise the natiion on medical
and health issues. Members are elected by their peers ffor distinguiished contributions to
medicinee and healthh. Dr. Victor J. Dzau is ppresident.

The three Academies work together as the National Accademies off Sciences, EEngineeringg,
and Medicine to proovide indepeendent, objeective analyssis and advicce to the naation and
conduct other activities to solvee complex problems andd inform pubblic policy decisions. Thhe
Academies also encoourage educaation and reesearch, reccognize outsttanding contributions too
knowledgge, and incrrease public understanding in matteers of sciencce, engineerring, and
medicinee.
