Preface
The present Volume 84 of Structure and Bonding is entitled "Metal Complexes
with Tetrapyrrole Ligands III" and completes a series of three volumes
dedicated to this general topic which started with Volume 64 and continued
with Volume 74. The first volume contained topics such as stereochemistry
ofmetallotetrapyrroles, infrared and Raman spectra, biomimetic porphyrins,
or metalloporphyrins with metal-carbon single bonds and metal-metal bonds.
In the second volume, subjects like extended X-ray absorption fine structure
or metal tetrapyrroles with special electrical and optical properties were
covered.
This concluding volume contains three articles:

3. Synthesis and Coordination Chemistry of Noble Metal Porphyrins"
(Johann W. Buchler, Christine Dreher, and Frank M. Ktinzel)
The first article gives a broad review of photochemical reactions of
metalloporphyrin and metallophthalocyanine systems. After a short
introduction to the photophysics of the excited states of porphyrins and
metolloporphyrins, a systematic presentation of the hitherto observed
photochemical reactions of metallotetrapyrroles is given. The material is
divided into individual chapters concerning photosubstitutions,
photoeliminations, and photoadditions, photoinsertions, photoisomerizations,
and photoredox reactions (the latter are reported separately for central atom
or tertapyrrole centered processes). Photochemical formation and degradation
ofpolynuclear complexes and applications ofphotoreactions in the tetrapyrrole
field conclude the article. In order to restrict the size of the volume, the
material is presented in 7 tables which give a quick overview and references.
Jozef Lima is Assistant Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the Slowak
Technical University (Bratislava) and author of a recent textbook devoted to
the photochemistry of coordination compounds (Ref. 1 of his article) appearing
both in English and Slovakian.

The second article deals with the synthesis and properties of metal
corrolates and corrinoids. In view of the many articles written on corrinoids,
the corrolates are in the foreground of the article, a detailed discussion of their
structures, of their IR-, UV/Vis-, photoelectron-, and NMR spectra, and of
their electrochemical behavior being given. Sylvia Licoccia is Professor of
Chemistry at the University of Rome Tor Vergata and has not only made
notable scientific contributions to corrole chemistry, but to porphyrin chemistry
as well.
The third article is devoted to the synthesis and chemical reactions of
noble metal porphyrins. Especially the porphyrin derivatives of ruthenium,
osmium, and rhodium have turned out to have a rich oxidation/reduction,
hydride or organometallic chemistry which appeares to be very promising for
the developement of catalytic industrial processes, either for hydrocarbon or
olefin oxidation, or selective hydrocarbon synthesis. Furthermore, their
chemistry serves to explain many reactions that are typical for heme proteins
and vitamin BI~. The editor has taken the opportunity to write this article,
together with two of his former doctoral students, and has tried to condense
the reactions into schemes in order to allow easy comparison of the chemical
reactions or porphyrins belonging to the Ru/Os or Rh/Ir dyads. He hopes that
these schemes together with the explanatory tables are not too confusing to
the readers, and that has not forgotten to mention any authors for their
contributions to this field which is a rapidly developing research area.

74, having appeared 1987 and 1990, respectively) on "Metal Complexes with
