Taking examples from Europe, Australia, the USA and Japan and treating
periods beyond living memory as well as the recent past, the volume high-
lights the contours of the current vogue for memory among historians while
demonstrating the diversity and imagination of the field.
Each chapter looks at a set of key historical and historiographical questions
through research-based case studies:

Contributors
Michal Bosworth is now retired after working for more than 30 years as an
independent scholar. Her main interests lie in heritage, immigration and
Australian food and diet.
Susan A. Crane is Associate Professor of Modern European History at the
University of Arizona. She is the author of Collecting and Historical Con-
sciousness in Early Nineteenth Century Germany (2000) and contributing
editor of Museums and Memory (2000). Her recent publications have
focused on photographs as historical evidence, particularly atrocity photo-
graphs from the Holocaust.
Jason Crouthamel earned his PhD in modern German history from Indiana
University,andhe iscurrentlyanassociateprofessoratGrandValleyState
University in Michigan. His recent publications include The Great War
andGermanMemory:Society,PoliticsandPsychologicalTrauma,1914–45
(University of Exeter Press, 2009). He is completing another book, An
Intimate History of the Trenches, which examines the effects of the First
World War on ordinary German soldiers’ conceptions of masculinity and
sexuality.
LindseyDoddisaLecturerinModernHistoryattheUniversityofHuddersfield.
She is interested in twentieth-century French history, specifically experiences
ofwar,thehistoryofchildhoodandthetheoryandpracticeoforalhistory.
Dr Hannah Ewence is Lecturer in Modern History at the University of
Chester.Herprimaryareaofresearchfocusesupontheculturalandspatial
representations of, and writings produced by, Jews and other minority
communities in fin de siècle and twentieth-century Britain. She is currently
completing her first monograph, The Other in Our Midst: Jews, Gender and
the British Imperial Imagination.
Rosanne Kennedy is Associate Professor of Literature and Gender Studies at
Australian National University. She writes about trauma, testimony and
cultural memory in literature, law, memoir and film. Her articles have
appeared in journals including Comparative Literature Studies, Biography,
List of Contributors ix
StudiesintheNovel,Women’sStudiesQuarterly,LifeWritingandAustralian
Feminist Studies.
Tony Kushner is Director of the Parkes Institute and Professor of History at
the University of Southampton. His most recent book is The Battle of
Britishness: Migrant Journeys, 1685 to the Present (Manchester University
Press, 2012).
Polly Low is Senior Lecturer in Ancient History at the University of
Manchester. She has particular interests in interstate politics, imperialism
and the history of burial and commemoration within and beyond Athens.
FranziskaSeraphimisAssociateProfessorofJapaneseHistoryatBostonCollege.
The authorofWar Memoryand Social PoliticsinJapan,1945–2005(2006),
she is currently working on a comparative social history of convicted
World War II criminals in Japan and Germany.
Susan M. Stabile is Associate Professor in English at Texas A&M University.
Her interests in American Studies are interdisciplinary, combining gender
theory, late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century American women’s lit-
eratureandculture,materialcultureandmuseumstudies,andcontemporary
women’s memoir.
