Introduction
Todate,wehavehadlittlesystematicknowledgeabouttheSiamesefaunaofthe
Me1o1onthidae,especiallyofMeIo1onthinae, thoughthereareseveralold recordsor
descriptionsof Indochineseand Chinesespeciesofthe family. Lately, chanceshave
been increasing to lookover Thai materialsoftheMe1o1onthidae, and it canbesaid
that weare readytostudy them. Since I began to payattention especially to the
Me1o1onthinaeof thiscountry, it has gradually becomeapparent that they include
manyspeciesdifferentfromtheonespreviouslyknownfromtheneighboringcountries
inspiteoftheirclosesimilarity.
Inthisseriesofpapers,IwillreportnewknowledgegainedontheMe1o1onthinae
ofThailandbasedmainlyonmaterialsofthecollectionintheEntomologicalLabora-
toryoftheUniversityofOsakaPrefectureandonthoseofmycollectionobtainedfrom
personalcollectors. At first, Iamgoingtoreport thespeciesof thegenusSoph1ops
FAIRMAIRE.

times the width of metafemur. Protibiaslender, butslightlymorerobust than inS
bitube1・culatusand tridentateand weakly carinateonthedorsalsurface. Longer one
ofmetatibia1spurslongerthantheistmetatarsalsegment,thelatterdistinctlyshorter
than the2nd. Clawwithanapicaltoothmoreslenderandlonger thanthetruncate
medianone.
Parameresofmalegenitaliaslender andoftengraduallybent inwards near the
apices;internalsaccomposedofamainlargerpieceandasmallercylindricalone,the
latterhook-shapedattheapex.
Female: - IN/HW0.64-0.69(AO66). Occipital areapunctatein thesameway
as in male. Antennalclublonger thanthepreceding5segmentscombined. The ist
costaoneachelytronbecomingwider at apical1/3, thenceanobliquesharp carina
appearingtowardsthe2ndcosta. Pygidium remarkablyproducedonthelowerhalf.
Lastabdominalsegmentwithadulltransverseridgealongtheanteriormargin. Meta-
femurshining,sometimesopaqueontheuppermargin, FW/FL0.35-0.38(AO37);
bristleson thesurfaceabout 1/6 times thewidth ofmetafemur as inmale. Longer

segmentwithadulltransverseridgealongtheanteriormargin. Pygidiummoderately
produced.
Mesofemurslender.smooth,shining,punctatefinelyandslightlylessdensely,and
almoststraightalongtheuppermargin: uppermarginsharplydeclivous. Metafemur
slender,shining, FW/FL 0.26-0.30(AO28); bristleson thesurface1/7-1/6 timesthe

Descriptio,1. Length:17.0-18.8mm.
Male: - Bodyelangate-ova1. Head,mouthpartandpronotumalmost blackish;
antennae,elytra,pygidium,legsandventralsurfacereddishbrown. Elytrairidescent
andopaquedorsally.
CIypeus bilobed; anterior marginwellemarginate. CW/CL about 3.0-3.6 (A
3.2). Frons flat, verydenselypunctate.1N/HW 0.69-0.72(AO71). Occipital area
usually bearingasmall-scale, narrowandextensivebandofpunctures near theeye
slightlyapart fromvertextowardsthebase,butsometimespunctatemerelysparsely.
Antennalclubslightlyshorterthanthepreceding6segmentscombined. Mentumwith
2sharplongitudinalcarinaealongthebothsides;anteriormargindistinctlynotched.
pronotumconvex,veryfinelyandverydenselypunctateonthedisc;anteriormar-
gin rimmed; anterior angleobtuse but subrectangular, posterior onevery obtuse;
lateral margingentlycurved just behind the middle. Scutellum coarsely and less
denselypunctate.
Eachelytronslightlyrugose,coarselypunctatewhollyandwithalmostobsolete
4 costaein addition to the sutural one. Pygidium moderately convex, wholly pu-
bescent and shining only around the apex. Last abdominal segment with a dull,
transverseridgealongtheanteriormargin.
Mesofemurslender,shining,coarselyandlessdenselypunctateandfeeblyreflexed
alongtheuppermargin;uppermarginsharplydeclivous. Metafemurslender,usually
shining except on the opaque upper marginal area, FW/FL 0.27-0.30 (AO29);
smoothsurfacealittlelessfinelyandalittlelessdenselypunctate, bristleson thesur
faceabout 1/10 timesthewidthofmetafemur. Protibia tridentate. Longer oneof
