PBEFACE
In the following pages, which have been preparedatthe instance
of a number of prominent NewYorkand Brooklyn Physicians, the
author has aimed not merely to accomplish the general object in
view: to prepare a Manualwhichwould bea welcome and reliable
aid to the American Physician in his intercourse with German
patients, and in reading German medical works and publications
;
butalso tosoarrange itthat it mightproveadequatetotheneedsof
those who possess a merely rudimentary knowledge of German, as
well asthosewhoare more advanced in theirGerman studies.
To this- end the following general plan, elaborated by numerous
minor, yet important features, has been adopted, and, the author
trusts, carried out ina manner that willbefound ofpractical use in
accomplishing thepurpose in view.
TheTextis separated into twomarked divisions:
TheFirst, with itsnumeroussubdivisions, gives anextensiveand
diversified collection ofwords and phrases that pertain directly or
indirectly tothe science and practice ofmedicine, such as
Parts of the Body (limbs, bones, muscles, nerves, organs, senses,
etc.)

Medical, Surgicaland Hygienic Appliances (Meansof Transpor-

Andforthe benefitofthosewhoare beginners,ornotfaradvanced
in thestudyof Gerraan, these words and terms are accompanied by
brief grammaticalannotations orhints, whenever deemed necessary.
Thus the nouns are generallyfollowed by m., f, or n., to indicate
their gender, and bythe endingsof the genitive singularandnomi-
native plural. Bold-faced type is used whenever irregularities in
nounsorverbsdemand specialattention. Compound ivords,withthe
exception of those that are self-explanatory, are preceded by their
Single components. Phrases and Sentences are prefixed by the
wordscontained in themnot beforeintroduced. Familiesofwords
are often grouped together to show their derivation and natural
connection, and thusbydevelopingtheirmeaningtoaid the memory
of the student.
TheSecond Division consists of Comwsationsswpposedtobeheld
at the sick-bed, andwith patients in general, which have been so
arranged as to cover as far as possible the QuestionsandAnsicers
that are likelyto occur when the diseases under which they are
grouped are underconsideration. And here theauthorbegsleaveto
saythatnothing,ofcourse, wasmoreremotefrom his thoughts than
to suggest methods of treatment, and that his sole purposewas to
offera wideränge ofwordsandphrasesin thissection, aswell as in
that under the head of Symptoms, that might be applicable to
theparticularcase. And in Order that everyGerman patient may
readily understaud the expressions used, the author has aimed to
makethem simpleand direct. Inthe Englishtranslation, however,
intended exclusivelyfor the Physician, the more familiär scientific
termshavegenerallybeenemployed.
The German and English Indexes, which contain about 14,000
words,willbefound ofgreatvalueandveryconvenientforreference,
