About the Special Issue Editor
Tania Fiaschi received her M.S. degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Florence,
Italy. ShethenreceivedherPh.D.inBiochemistryandspecializationinBiochemistryandClinical
Chemistry, also from the University of Florence. Since 2007, her research has focused on the
regenerativeeffectsofadiponectininskeletalmuscle.Heractualinterestisinthestudyofadiponectin
involvement in the amelioration of inherited myopathies such as Duchenne muscular dystrophy,
Bethlemmyopathy,andUllrichcongenitalmusculardystrophy.SheiscurrentlyservingasAssociate
ProfessorinMolecularBiologyattheUniversityofFlorence.

Adiponectin,themostabundantsecretedadipokine,hasreceivedgreatattentionfromthescientific
communitysinceitsdiscovery[1].Thehugenumberofstudiesisjustifiedbytheinsulin-sensitizing
roleandthebeneficialeffectsofadiponectinindiabeticconditions[2,3].Overtheyears,alargebody
ofevidencehassupportedapleiotropicroleofthehormoneindifferenttissuesinwhichitinfluences
variedphysiologicalaspectsbothinhealthyandindiseasedconditions.
ThisSpecialIssue,entitled“MechanismsofAdiponectinAction”,showsthepleiotropicroleof
adiponectinbypresentingthreeresearcharticlesandsevenreviewsfocusedonrecentfindingsabout
adiponectinindifferenttargettissues.TheSpecialIssuecontainstworeviewsaboutadiponectinin
skeletalmuscle,aclassicaladiponectintargettissue,inwhichthehormoneaffectsbothmetabolic[4]
andregenerativeproperties[5].Krauseetal.reportacloserelationshipbetweenphysicalexerciseand
expressionandcirculatinglevelsofadiponectininbothhealthyanddiseasedpopulation.Indeed,a
higheradiponectinlevelisassociatedwithgreaterphysicalactivity,whilesomeconditions,suchas
inactiveobese,pre-diabetic,anddiabeticpatients,arecharacterizedbydecreasedadiponectinlevels.
Therestorationofproperadiponectinlevelscanbeachievedwithphysicalexercise,andthisleadsto
increasedinsulinsensitivity[6].Gamberietal.discussesthecurrentknowledgeaboutadiponectinin
myopathies(bothnon-inherited/acquiredandinheritedmyopathies). Thepaperreportsthatsome
myopathies(asDuchennemusculardystrophyandcollagenVI-relatedmyopathies)arecharacterized
byadecreasedcirculatingadiponectinlevelandthathormonereplenishmentinducesbeneficialeffects
inthediseasedmuscles[7].Studiesabouttheinvolvementofadiponectinincancerhavebeengrowing
inthelastyears.Paridaetal.reporthowobesityandadiposityarecloselyrelatedtocancerprogression
inseveraltypesoftumors(suchasliver,pancreatic,prostate,andcolorectalcancers). Obesityacts
bydysregulatingadipokineproduction,leadingtotheupregulationofoncogenicadipokines,such
asleptin,andthedownregulationofadiponectin,whichplaysaprotectiveroleinobesity-associated
cancers[8].Abouttherelationshipbetweenobesityandcancer,Gelsominoetal.describetheroleof
adiponectinintheonsetofobesity-associatedfemalecancers(suchascervical,ovarian,endometrial,and
breastcancers),reportingthatadiponectinexertsanti-proliferativeactionsinsomefemalecancers[9].
Barbeetal. reportanoverviewoftheexpressionlevelsandsignalingpathwaysofadiponectinin
maleandfemalereproductivetract,fromgametogenesistoembryoimplantationandembryonal
development.Inaddition,theauthorsdescribesomediseasesassociatedwithinfertility,characterized
byalteredadiponectinlevels(suchaspolycysticovarysyndrome,ovarianandendometrialcancers,
endometriosis, gestationaldiseases, preeclampsia, andfoetalgrowthrestriction)[10]. Smolinska
etal. reportaresearcharticledescribingacomparativetranscriptomicstudyperformedincontrol
andadiponectin-treatedendometrialtissuesisolatedfrom15-to16-day-pregnantpigs.Thefindings
evidencethatadiponectinaffectsprocessesimportantforreproductivesuccess,suchascellproliferation,
celladhesion,andsynthesisofsteroids,prostaglandins,andcytokines[11].Theanti-atherogenicrole
ofadiponectinhasbeenwidelyrecognized. Yanaietal. illustratethemechanismsunderlyingthe
anti-atherogenicroleofthehormone,describingmethods(suchasweightloss,exercise,administration
ofnutritionalfactorsandanti-diabeticdrugs)leadingtotheriseofcirculatingadiponectin,whichhave
beenproventohaveprotectiveeffectsagainstatheroscleroticprogression[12].Aroleofadiponectin
