Preface
The idea of this book was forming when I was writing the Part II examina-
tion. I could not find a single comprehensive book that covered solely the
basic sciences part of the examination, and hence I struggled greatly
preparing it. Though there are standard recommended textbooks for the
clinical paper, there is no such common ground for the basic sciences
paper. To make matters worse, the examination does not, as yet, fully
reflect the curriculum, some topics being examined in detail while others
are covered only superficially if at all. Rather than mixing up different
questions from different chapters of the syllabus, I have deliberately kept
them separate, hoping that it will help in the revision of particular chapters.
The number of questions in each chapter is intended to reflect the import-
ance of the topic in the examination. I have also deliberately kept the
explanatory answers brief, with the intention of encouraging the student to
read in greater depth around the topics in question. Because of the general
vagueness of the basic sciences paper, it is extremely difficult to reflect
exactly the real examination questions, and I must admit that this book does
not attempt to do the impossible. However, I hope that it will help in
preparation for this difficult part of the examination.
