How Superior Productions Works
HOW TO PARTICIPATE AS AN ABSENTEE BUYER
We have made preparations to bid and buy livestock through Superior Productions’ “Call or Click-
To-Bid” service for those unable to attend in person on sale day. Please note that all of the lots in
the sale will also be available for viewing online prior to sale day at www.superiorlivestock.com.
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS
Turn in Bids Over the Phone. This is our traditional method of buying livestock and is the sug-
gested process for anyone who does not have excellent, high-speed internet. To get started, simply
go online to www.superiorlivestock.com and click on the tab titled “Register for a Buyer Number”.
Select the registration form for Superior Productions and print the registration form, fill it out and
fax it in to Superior Productions at [phone] with a signature on it. You can also mail it in to
the address provided on the form. Upon receipt of this information, Superior will call you with a
buyer’s number and the bid line phone number that you will use on sale day to place bids over the
phone. You can also register over the phone by calling 800-431-4452.
Click-To-Bid. This is Superior’s newest way to buy cattle! Please note that high speed internet is re-
quired – this is not for dial-up or satellite internet. Registration is free, but you must become a
member of www.superiorclicktobid.com to sign up. Becoming a member is easy – just go to the
homepage of www.superiorclicktobid.com and follow the out-lined steps to get started. Input your
information and select a username and password. You will receive an e-mail confirming you are a
member. From that point forward you just have to sign in and select the sale you would like to reg-
ister for.
Viewing The Auction
If the sale is being broadcast on RFD-TV, then it will be available on Dish Network channel 231
and DirecTV channel 345. If the sale is being broadcast on RURAL TV then, it will be available on
DISH Network channel 232. Please note that there is a short delay if you are watching the auction
on television, so be sure to call in at least one lot ahead of the lot you are interested in bidding on.
Regardless of the television channel the sale is being broadcast on, all auctions will be broadcast
live on the internet at www.superiorclicktobid.com. Some auctions will ONLY be broadcast online.
Remember you can call in to bid whether you watch on the TV or on the internet, but you must be
a member of www.superiorclicktobid.com to “click-to-bid”. If you just want to watch the auction
without bidding online, you can do so by entering the auction as a guest. Guests do not need a
username or password to watch the auction. Your computer must have Flash Media Player and
Java installed to view the auction online.
Bidders who are successful in making purchases via satellite or internet will be contacted by the
ranch after the sale to settle payment and make shipping arrangements.

Should you spend more or less for a bull?
BULL PURCHASE PRICE
Purchasing bulls is a critical management decision. The following table was developed assuming:
annual bull maintenance costs of $350 (operating costs plus a 10 percent risk of death loss), a 90
percent calf crop, and a salvage value of $1,100.
Several conclusions can be reached from this data:
Losing a bull in the first or second year is extremely costly on a per-calf basis and the loss over-
whelms most of the genetic potential that might be derived from that sire’s limited influence in the
herd. When possible, bulls should be servicing 25 or more females per season to allow the enter-
prise the flexibility to spend more on each bull purchased. Determining the price to be spent on a
bull depends on the marketing target and the bull’s ability to generate an advantage in excess of
the additional cost per calf as purchase price increases. For example, a bull purchased for $3,000
and used in a 1:25 scenario for four years must contribute more than $5.56 per calf across all
four calf crops to warrant the additional price as compared to a $2,500 bull.
The national sire evaluation system allows producers to make reasonable comparisons between
bulls and groups of bulls by estimating expected progeny differences for traits such as weaning
weight, yearling weight and carcass weight. These estimates can then be assigned economic value
by applying market prices. Some breed associations are now providing additional
index values that are reasonable estimates of composition traits such as carcass value, maternal
merit and feedlot performance.

Red Legend is a good herd bull prospect that is extra stout, long bodied, and
