CONTROVERSIAL CONSERVATION
The lora turtle is a sea turtle that’s in danger - and one of the reasons
is that people steal its eggs. A surprising solution is now being tried.

The beach at Ostional in Costa Rica is one of only eight beaches that
the lora turtle uses to build nests for its young. When the beach is full of
turtles, it doesn’t just attract wildlife lovers - it attracts people hoping to
make money too. Turtle eggs are quite a popular food, and people pay
quite a lot of cash for them because they believe that eating them helps
people to have children.

Although international trade in turtle products is illegal, people can
supply them to restaurants, and some sell them illegally. On some
beaches, more than 80% of lora turtle nests don’t survive because of
people. It would be disastrous for the turtles if the problem got that bad
at Ostional, one of the most important of all their nesting sites. So the
authorities there have taken the decision to allow people to help
themselves to a limited amount of eggs.
The idea is that allowing people to take some of the eggs for part of the
time will benefit both the turtles and needy unemployed people.
Rodrigo Morera Avila, head biologist at the Ostional Conservation
Project, said: “The community gets an income while bringing about
social change. The project has two sides - that of conservation, and
the social project.”
Some people are not convinced, however, that the scheme will reduce
the number of eggs that are taken by people from the beach. When the
project began in September 2013, people reported that they had seen
egg collectors fill enormous sacks with eggs.

METHOD
Discard the bones and any skin from the salmon and lay it in an ovenproof dish.
Blend a can of celery soup with four tablespoons of milk and 75g of grated

AN ANCIENT GIVER OF HEALTH
The seeds of a plant called chia were one of the main foods of the Aztecs, who
also used them in religious ceremonies and as a medicine. For hundreds of
years, only people in small villages in Mexico and Guatemala ate the seeds, but
now they are being discovered all over the world - with good reason.
It would be possible to eat chia seeds and nothing else and remain healthy.
They are an excellent source of protein and also provide fibre and a good
amount of vitamins. They are particularly useful as energy for runners and other
athletes.
As for their taste, if you like nuts you’ll love chia seeds!

HOW ADE ADEPITAN FINALLY MADE HIS PARENTS PROUD
Ade Adepitan is one of Britain’s best-known Paralympic athletes. To get anywhere in
sport, however, he had to ignore his parents’ advice. His father, in particular, thought
there was no future in disability sport back in the 1980s. Ade recalls: “He was convinced
I was ruining my life.”
It wasn’t the first time Ade had come into conflict with his parents over the direction he
chose to take. They didn’t even want the teenage Ade to begin using a wheelchair. “My
parents thought me getting into a wheelchair was like me giving up on walking,” says
Ade.
To Ade, however, the wheelchair represented a new freedom, not worsening disability.
“The disabled kids were cooler...they got up to crazy things. We'd be out in the streets
racing our chairs, playing basketball, travelling all over east London like a crew. It felt
like I belonged. We all had the same problems.”
Ade’s father disliked the idea of his son using a wheelchair so much that he threw it out.
Ade retrieved it and hid it in the garden so that he could continue using it outside the
house instead of the leg supports he’d had to use since getting the disease polio as a
young child.
Perhaps it’s not surprising how much Ade’s father tried to control his life when you
consider the disappointments in his own life. He and his mother took Ade to London
from Nigeria when he was three because they thought a boy with polio would have a
better life there. The move didn’t come without sacrifices. They had to leave Ade’s sister
behind for several years and the Adepitans were unable to continue their teaching
careers in the UK. Mr Adepitan found himself doing cleaning jobs. To him, academic
success was the key to a better life for Ade.
Full parental acceptance of Ade’s life choices finally came after Ade made it to the
Sydney Paralympics as a member of the British basketball team and his mother and
father saw him in broadcasts of the opening ceremony and competition. “When I came
back Dad was crying and he gave me a big hug and he realised this is what I wanted to
do. We were friends again.”
So what does Ade think would most Improve wheelchair users’ lives today? His answer
to that is a disabled advisor to the government on public transport. “I used to get the
train to work and it was a nightmare - and I’m fit and strong and have good wheelchair
skills. Sometimes I threw my chair onto the train. People would see a chair flying past
them and me falling on the floor to get on. That should not be the way.”
