Preface
The MATSCIENCE Institute holds two scientific meetings a year,
an anniversary symposium in January to commemorate its birth in
1962 and a three-week summer school in August. The proceedings
of the first three meetings were initially made available for private
circulation as cyclostyled notes. Professor Rosenfeld, the editor of
Nuclear Physics, expressed the view that such material, which repre
sented the cooperative effort of the scientists from various countries
who participated in the visiting program of our Institute, should be
published in a "more permanent form" to reach a wider community
of readers.
We were given the opportunity to do this by Mr. Earl Coleman,
President of Plenum Press, who made the spontaneous offer, during
his visit to Madras just a year ago to publish these proceedings as
a continuing series. It was also decided to include in each volume
certain lectures delivered during the year, though not at the meeting
itself, if they were relevant to the subject matter of the symposium.
The handsome effort of Plenum Press to bring out the series begin
ning with the very first symposium has been matched by the willing
cooperation of our visiting scientists, who have made this an inter
national endeavor, the wholesome consequences of which will be felt
beyond the domain of science.
In particular, for the preparation of the first volume, our grateful
thanks are due to Professors Segre and Takeda and Dr. Maglic for
allowing us to include their lectures in the volume, to Professor Zemach
and the publishers of the Physical Review for permission to summarize
and reproduce figures from his paper in that journal, and to Professor
A. H. Rosenfeld for the inclusion of the table of elementary particles
from a UCRL Report.

Introduction
This symposium was arranged as a tribute to our distinguished visitor,
Professor R. E. Marshak, who graciously accepted the Niels Bohr visit
ing professorship of our new Institute of Mathematical Sciences. There
is a peculiar appropriateness in naming Professor Marshak as the first
occupant of this chair; the very conception of this Institute originated
during my visit to America in the spring of 1956, when I had the
opportunity to watch the proceedings of the Rochester conference.
At that time, to us in India, a world such as this, characterized by high
endeavor and creative achievement, seemed beyond reach and almost
beyond imagination. The fortuitous visit of Professor Niels Bohr to
Madras and his sincere interest in the work of our group transformed
vision into reality. This assembly is dedicated to that great ideal, ex
pressed in the words of Professor Niels Bohr as the "worldwide coopera
tion in science which offers such great opportunities for promoting
understanding between all peoples."
Were we not animated by this spirit we would not have had the
temerity to invite the sponsor of the foremost international conference
in physics to participate in a symposium in which only a small group of
young theoreticians is taking part. We are aware that any study in
high-energy physics would need the active participation of experi
mental groups from leading laboratories in the world. The effort
made by our group is, I presume, all the more courageous since, despite
the absence of experimentalists, it attempted to discuss problems which
hold the minds of the most gifted scientists in physics today.
The theory of elementary particles is now offering the greatest
challenge since the birth of quantum mechanics. The problems are so
complex and baffling that even the novice sometimes feels able to
discuss them with the savant without fear of being shown his place, for
nobody knows whether we are dealing with a composite theory of
elementary particles or an elementary theory of composite particles.

It is a situation which can be very encouraging for a young aspirant to
a scientific career; there seems to be work to be done by every class of
physicist, from the humblest of calculators to the most exalted of
creative scientists.
All the talks herein are semiexpository. Here and there are some
strains of speculation and criticism which we offer to our distinguished
visitor as our first attempts in this field.

Three interesting lectures were delivered during 1962 by Dr. Bogdan.
Maglic of CERN, Professor E. Segre of Berkeley, and Professor G.
Takeda of Japan during their visits to MATSCIENCE, and since the sub
jects of these lectures were closely related to those of the symposium,
we have included them in this volume with the kind permission and
cooperation of the authors.
