of technical design and, above all, to fully embrace their environmental

Norman Wienand is Head of the Architecture Subject Group at Sheffield
Hallam University, where, as an academic and a Chartered Architectural
Technologist,hisfocusisonthedevelopmentofthepedagogyofarchitec-
turaltechnologyatundergraduateandpostgraduatelevels.Coupledwiththe
pursuitofsustainabledesignthroughtheapplicationofsustainabletechnol-
ogies,heisengagedinthedevelopmentofatheoreticalapproachtotechni-
caldesigninarchitecture.
JoanZundeisanarchitectwhohastaughtdesignsubjectsformanyyears.
She is editor for the Technologies of Architecture series and co-author of
Volume1,IntegratedStrategiesinArchitecture.Shehasaparticularinterest
incommunicationbetweendesignersandclientsandwithinthedesignand
buildteam.

This book provides for trainee or qualified Chartered Architectural
Technologists (MCIAT) to understand their particular specialisms. To
be recognised as competent, a Chartered Architectural Technologist
must be able to analyse, synthesise and evaluate design factors in
ordertoproducedesignsolutionswhichwillsatisfyperformance,pro-
ductionandprocurementcriteria.
Thiswillbeachievedthroughthedesign,selectionandspecificationof
material, components and assembly and the management, coordina-
tion,communication,presentationandmonitoringofsolutions,which
perform to the agreed brief and standards in terms of time, cost and
quality.

ofthetechnicaldesignprocessfromearlystagesrightthroughtothe
detaileddesign.Anydesignhastobecommunicatedtotheend-userina

tion and the conventions in drawing and specification production.
Communication of information is a vital section in this book as it is
only through correct communication ofdesigns thatthe designer can

as they need to, the ideas, thoughts and concerns of the designer.
