Abstract. Corundum structure alumina (α-Al O ) powders were prepared via a non-hydrolytic sol-gel

(NHSG) method using aluminum as raw material, ethanol as solvent, and iodine as catalyst. X-ray
diffraction (XRD), differential thermal analysis (DTA), thermo gravimetric analysis (TG) were used to
characterize the crystal phase of the products, while scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and
transmission electron microscope (TEM) were employed to analyze the morphology. The results
indicated that γ-Al O was completely changed to α-Al O at 1100 oC with a bit of aggregation. When 3

wt.% polyethylene glycol 600 (PEG 600) was introduced on the NHSG process, the dispersion was
improved and the particle size decreased to100 nm.
Introduction
In recent years, α-Al O has been attracted much attention as an excellent inorganic material due to its

high heat-resistance, high rigidity, high corrosion-resistance, high abrasion resistance, good electrical
resistivity and catalytic abilities. It has widely prospects for application in various fields, such as
ceramics, metallurgy, electronics and catalysts [1]. Several methods have been reported for its synthesis,
including solid state method [2], vapor phase method [3], thermal decomposition method [4],
precipitation method [5], hydrothermal method [6], and sol–gel method [7]. For the solid state reaction, it
is very easy to introduce impurities, while chemical vapor deposition reaction and hydrothermal method
demand special equipments. Although the traditional hydrolytic sol–gel method can obtain pure α-Al O ,

it is hard to control the hydrolysis rate of precursors and has long gelation periods. The precipitation
method has a shortage of hard agglomeration and broad particle size distribution.
In the early 1990s, Viouxb et al. [8] proposed a new sol–gel method, based on the condensation in
non-aqueous media of chloride precursors with oxygen-donors rather than water, namely,
non-hydrolytic sol–gel (NHSG) method. It was suggested that the sol did not go through metal alkoxide
hydrolysis process but directly turn into gel by the reactants polycondensation. The extensions of NHSG
process were very successful in the synthesis of ZnO [9], ZrO [10], TiO [11], ZrSiO [12], etc., which

were hardly synthesized in aqueous systems or at low temperature [13]. S. Acosta et al. [14] prepared
α-Al O via NHSG method based on the condensation between aluminum alkoxides and aluminum

halides. However, the raw material aluminum alkoxides is very expensive, and thus limits its application.
On the other hand, the morphology of the prepared α-Al O was not reported. It is well known that the

microstructure has great impact on the properties of the oxide [15-18]. Therefore, controllable synthesis
of α-Al O is very important for its development. In this paper, α-Al O powders were prepared by using

low-cost aluminum powders as aluminum source and PEG 600 as dispersant, which demonstrates a
novel strategy to synthesize α-Al O powders via NHSG method.

Experimental
α-Al O powders were prepared by non-hydrolytic sol-gel method using aluminum (Al, AR) as raw

material, absolute ethanol (CH CH OH, AR) as solvent and iodine (I AR) as catalyst. Briefly, 0.54 g
