This thesis studies the valuation of time charter contracts with purchase options in the shipping industry. Two models are introduced for valuation purposes: 1) the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process, which allows for the derivation of analytic solutions for some simple freight rate contingent claims, and 2) the geometric mean reversion process, which values assets using Monte Carlo simulation. The Ornstein-Uhlenbeck model is applied to value claims dependent on freight rates and the value of a vessel. The geometric mean reversion model values a vessel and a European option to purchase the vessel. The results of the two models are compared, with limitations of the models and their assumptions also discussed.
