NEO film premiere and panel discussion highlights a robust line-up of free programs
On Monday, January 19, the Cleveland Museum of Art will open its doors for a free daylong
celebration of art, music and film in celebration of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Family-friendly
activities, storytelling and song will fill the galleries to honor Dr. King’s vision of altruism and
acceptance.
Program features include the NEO film premiere of Hate Crimes in the Heartland, a groundbreaking
documentary that explores media coverage of hate crimes in America. Following the film, a panel of
religious, civic and activist leaders as well as the film's producer and writer, will discuss local
challenges to diversity and share thoughts on service-related responses to hate. Panelists include:
Rachel Lyon, Hate Crimes in the Heartland writer and producer, Rev. Courtney Clayton Jenkins, senior
pastor and teacher of the South Euclid United Church of Christ, Bettysue Feuer, regional chair and
National Commission member of the local Anti- Defamation League, Rev. Dr. Jawanza Colvin, pastor
of the Olivet Institutional Baptist Church and Skyler Edge, LGBTQ activist.
The panel will be moderated by Russ Mitchell, lead anchor and managing editor for WKYC-TV.

Art-Making: Give the Gift of Warmth, Atrium
Create scarves to help those in our community who need a little more warmth during the long
winter.
Art-Making: Get-Well Wishes, Atrium
Use your creativity to create a card that will brighten the day of an ailing child.
Participate: Hope Blossoms, Atrium
Help create a collaborative installation symbolizing our collective aspirations for the future. Each
person can create a flower for each of their wishes. By the end of the day, we will have a field of
hope.
Film: Videos of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., North Court Lobby
Learn about Martin Luther King, Jr. through footage of his life.
11:30 a.m.–Noon Art Stories: Sharing, Gallery 223
Read, look, and play with us! This storytime series for families with children under 5 fuses art and
literature. Older siblings are welcome!
Noon. Performance: Antioch Adult Ensemble, Atrium
Enjoy this local choir’s engaging musical performance in the museum’s Atrium.
1:00 p.m. Gallery Tour: The Power of Words, meet in the Atrium
This tour uses art from the museum’s collection to explore the life, work, and powerful legacy of Dr.
King.
1:00 p.m. Art in Motion, Smith Gallery
Join ShaRan Marshall—dancer, teacher, and choreographer—for a family-friendly movement
activity inspired by the museum’s collection.
1–3:00 p.m. Art Cart: Artists of our Region, West Allee
This special collection of art can be touched by visitors wearing gloves.
2:00 p.m. Film and panel discussion, Hate Crimes in the Heartland, Gartner Auditorium Free.

The groundbreaking documentary, Hate Crimes in the Heartland, explores media coverage of hate
crimes in America. Following the film, a panel of religious, civic, and activist leaders as well as the
film's producer and writer, will discuss local challenges to diversity and share thoughts on service-
related responses to hate.
