Martin Hoogland begint in 1973 als een van de jongste en meest ambitieuze agenten in het Amsterdamse politiekorps. Na goede beoordelingen mag hij als 19-jarige agent naar het beruchte Bureau Warmoesstraat. Daar komt hij bloot te staan aan corruptie binnen het politieapparaat en aan de verleidingen van de onderwereld. Vanwege wangedrag wordt hij in 1984 gedwongen ontslag te nemen.Hoogland weet zich vervolgens in recordtijd aan te sluiten bij de top van de Joegoslavische maffia. Hij dompelt zich onder in het nachtleven en gebruikt veel te veel cocaine. In 1993 wordt hij veroordeeld voor de moord op maffiabaas Klaas Bruinsma en drugshandelaar Tonny Hijzelendoorn. Martin Hoogland moet twintig jaar de gevangenis in. Als hij in 2004 tijdens zijn resocialiseringstraject naar buiten mag, wordt hij op straat doodgeschoten.Niet eerder werd Hooglands levensverhaal zo uitvoerig beschreven. De auteur heeft zich mede gebaseerd op vele gesprekken met (ex-)agenten, criminele collega’s en familieleden, onder wie Martin Hooglands zoon. Martin H. is het dramatische relaas van een ontspoorde politieagent, tegen de achtergrond van de verharding van de softdrugshandel en de opkomst van coke in Nederland.
