About Mariana Pineda
José Luis Olaizola ha novelado, con su maestría habitual, la corta pero intensa vida de esta granadina que nació en 1804. Era hija ilegítima de un caballero de la Orden de Calatrava y padeció ese estigma durante su azarosa infancia, pero lo superó gracias a su encanto personal y, pasados unos años, a su singular belleza. Muy joven, se casó con Manuel de Peralta, un militar de ilustre familia que fue quien la inició en los ideales liberales de la Constitución de Cádiz, de los que acabó siendo entusiasta defensora. Así participó en numerosas conspiraciones contra el absolutismo de Fernando VII, que a la postre acabaron costándole la vida. Con solo veintisiete años murió ajusticiada, acusada de bordar una bandera morada con las enseñas: «Libertad, Igualdad y Ley». Fallecido el rey déspota, Mariana Pineda se convirtió, hasta hoy, en el símbolo de los nobles ideales de la libertad.
