Foreword
The relationship between urban space and people, an issue with a long preoccu-
pation of urban experts, has been constantly theorized. Cities have historically
played an important role not only in the economic and social transformation of
the nation states, but also served at the same time as an instrument of hegemony,
power and wealth for some classes, and of marginalization, peripheralization, and
exploitation of others. Internal morphology of cities transform and their relation-
ship with peripheries result in enormous changes in the land use, creation of real
estates and uneven development of infrastructure influencing livelihoods, living
conditions and health of the people in these spaces.
This study provides detailed empirical evidences from both urban and peri-
urban Delhi, keeping people who are at the margins at the center of the analy-
sis. The book brings together multidisciplinary, multi-dimensional work, and
offers insights and research inputs for students and researchers interested in urban
issues from disciplines like Geography, Sociology, Economics, Demography,
Anthropology, and Public Health.

Preface
It gives us immense pleasure to share our journey in compiling this volume
Marginalization in Globalizing Delhi: Issues of Land, Livelihoods and Health.
This journey was initiated with our participation in a workshop organized by
the Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies (IHS), in Rotterdam,
the Netherlands in 2012, on “Urban Development(s) and Emerging Issues of
Inclusion, Governance and Sustainability in India”.
The conference not only enriched us academically but was also an experi-
ence, which invigorated and stimulated our minds. The vibrant discussions and
exchange of ideas at the workshop culminated in this comprehensive and interdis-
ciplinary volume. During the tea breaks between the sessions of the conference,
over the cups of hot beverages of our choices, and while breathing in the freshness
of the morning air into our lungs during the walks, we discovered ourselves drawn
together to work on this manuscript with a new camaraderie. A realization of com-
mon academic interests despite different specializations propelled this idea further.
The commonalities and similar interests, which brought us together for this inno-
vative, productive, and memorable journey, have since then multiplied manifold!
Jawaharlal Nehru University is known for interdisciplinary studies. What could
be a better illustration than four colleagues with different areas of expertise from
two different centers coming together to initiate, develop, and compile a volume,
involving young scholars who have worked with them? This is also a reflection of
a productive culmination of an academic relationship, which evolved during the
shaping of dissertations and theses, in a more innovative and creative way.
This book is a collation of ideas to trigger the discourse on the processes of
globalization which a city undergoes to change the dynamics of land, livelihoods
and health, with a focus on people at the margins of society.

This book would not have been possible without the vision of Prof. Amitabh
Kundu who was instrumental in the collaboration between Institute for Housing
and Developmental Studies (IHS), Rotterdam, the Netherlands and Jawaharlal
Nehru University, New Delhi. He encouraged our participation in the workshop
on “Urban Development(s) and Emerging Issues of Inclusion, Governance and
Sustainability in India” organized under this collaboration which triggered our
academic thinking into shaping this book. We wish to put on record our gratitude
to him. We are also grateful to the participants in the Rotterdam workshop, inter-
action with whom gave the direction to our idea of this book.
We also wish to thank all the scholars who readily agreed to contribute. We
would like to specially thank all the research scholars who took out time from
their research, to write the papers based on their M.Phil. and Ph.D. works. We
highly appreciate their efforts to revise the papers after getting suggestions and
comments. The delays on our part were put up by the contributors in good spirit
and revisions done with patience. We highly appreciate their endeavor to improve
and produce the best.
To facilitate the process of putting the volume together, we held a review work-
shop on 20–21 December 2014, which was sponsored by the Indian Council of
Social Science Research (ICSSR) and Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. A
panel of experts discussed the papers and gave their valuable comments and sug-
gestions. This helped in enriching the quality of the papers. We express our heart-
felt gratitude to Profs. P.M. Kulkarni, Saraswati Raju, Sachidanand Sinha, R.B.
Bhagat, Shrawan K. Acharya, Ritu Priya, Talat Munshi, Dr. Attiqur Rehman and
Dr. Abdul Shaban for their efforts.
Special thanks are due to our dedicated and enthusiastic students. Without their
support, it would have been difficult to bring this endeavor to fruition. Dr. Ranvir
