Preface
Old and older: ready or not, here they come!
It is common knowledge that the population is aging—in 2011, the 78 million
baby boomers born between 1946 and 1964 began to turn 65, marking the beginning
of a new and considerably greyer America. By 2030, 20% of the US population will
be over 65 years—up from 12% in 2005. The shift in the demographics is going to
signi fi cantly challenge our healthcare system. The question is, are we ready? In the
fi eld of anesthesiology—especially in our role as leaders in perioperative medi-
cine—we need to address the aging problem aggressively—by educating and engag-
ing our residents and peers. By putting together a manual of geriatric anesthesiology,
I have attempted to combine a mix of geriatric anesthesia “must knows” and some
more general discussions on some very “elderly” topics—such as ethics, dementia,
polypharmacy, and the role of the geriatric consultant. Many thanks to all the authors
who participated so enthusiastically on this important mission!
