Preface
The popularity of the first edition of this book together with clear
changes in child psychiatric practice over the past 10 years have led
to this second edition. The aim is still, as outlined in the preface to the
first edition, to provide readable accounts of the rationale and reality
of child and adolescent psychiatric work by experienced practitioners
in the field. We have made changes to the topics covered to reflect the
increasingly evidence-based nature of child and adolescent psychiatric
practice: chapters on cognitive and interpersonal therapies are now
included under specific types of treatment; under liaison with other
services there are now chapters on working with primary care and
educational services; and a contribution on legal aspects has also been
added. We hope that this new edition will help paediatricians, general
practitioners, and other doctors and professionals working with
children to address the psychiatric aspects of their practice.
