For many years Malcolm Muggeridge
has been one of the world’s most dis­
tinguished—and frequently controver­
sial-journalists and broadcasters. He is
known to millions, and during his varied
career he has been just about everywhere
and met the great and the interesting of
many lands. Throughout his life he has
kept albums of photographs, family stud­
ies as well as those of more public occa­
sions; and he himself has constantly been
photographed, not least on television.

special themes and highlights of his life.
Muggeridge reveals himself en

and at school in Croydon; at Cambridge
in the early 1920s; in different parts of
the world, including India, Egypt, Rus­
sia, Switzerland, and the United States;
and as an intelligence officer in the Sec­
ond World War, particularly during the
liberation of Paris.
It was in Paris that he met P. G. Wode-
house; and the book abounds in picture
and word portraits of Malcolm’s special
friends, who include Hugh Kingsmill,
George Orwell, John Betjeman, Graham
Greene, Alec Vidler, and Evelyn Waugh,
and of international figures whom he par­
ticularly admired such as General de
Gaulle, “Monty,” and indeed Winston
Churchill, despite the controversy in
1954 over Churchill’s fitness to govern,
