Preface
Collected on these pages is a wealth of insights, experiences and advice
distilled to provide you, the reader, with a richly informative but hope-
fully not overwhelming series of chapters on what you can do to make
the most of medical school. Too often I have witnessed students’ noble
ambitions – be it in research, leadership or elsewhere – squandered by
a lack of experience, insight or guidance. This represents a lose–lose
situation: students are deprived of an opportunity to build their skills
or track record, often to the detriment of their future enthusiasm and
engagement, and medicine or society at large is deprived of the weird
and perhaps wonderful contribution they might have otherwise (one
day) made. While completing medical school and becoming a safe and
competent doctor is the number one goal – I hope this book will aid
readers to make the most of this time and, with any luck, their careers
thereafter.

Editor
Dr Ashton Barnett-Vanes is a Final Year Medical Student based in
London, United Kingdom. He completed his medical and clinical sci-
ence years at St George’s, University of London where he was awarded
the William Brown and Devitt-Pendlebury Exhibition. In 2012, he
graduated with first class honours in his intercalated BSc and in 2015
completed his PhD in war injuries – both at Imperial College London.
He is a former intern of the World Health Organization and in 2016
was a British Council scholar at Tsinghua University, Beijing. He is the
recipient of a Foulkes Foundation Fellowship.
