Preface
TheChinaConferenceonMachineTranslation(CCMT)isanationalannualacademic
conference held by the Machine Translation Committee of the Chinese Information
Processing Society of China (CIPSC), which brings together researchers and practi-
tionersintheareaofmachinetranslation,providingaforumforthoseinacademiaand
industrytoexchangeandpromotethelatestdevelopmentsinmethodologies,resources,
projects,andproducts,withaspecialemphasisonthelanguagesinChina.Sincethefirst
session of CCMT in 2005, 17 sessions have been successfully organized (the first 14
sessionswerecalledCWMT),andatotalof11machinetranslationevaluations(2007,
2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021) have been organized,
aswellasoneopensourcesystemmoduledevelopmenttask(2006)andtwostrategic
seminars (2010, 2012). These activities have made a substantial impact on advancing
theresearchanddevelopmentofmachinetranslationinChina.Theconferencehasbeen
ahighlyproductiveforumfortheprogressofthisareaandisconsideredaleadingand
importantacademiceventinthenaturallanguageprocessingfieldinChina.
Thisyear,the18thsession(CCMT2022)tookplaceinLhasa,Xizang,C.Thiscon-
ference continued the tradition of being the most important academic event dedicated
toadvancingmachinetranslationresearchinChina.Ithostedthe12thMachineTrans-
lation Evaluation Campaign, featured two keynote speeches delivered by Nan Duan
(Microsoft Research Asia) and Qun Liu (Huawei Noah’s Ark Lab), and included two
tutorialsdelivered-byTongXiao,YinqiaoLi,andBeiLi(NortheasternUniversity)and
Longyue Wang and Xing Wang (Tencent). The conference also organized five panel
discussions, bringing attention to unsupervised and low-resource machine translation,
theindustryofmachinetranslation,thefrontierofmachinetranslation,andtheforum
forPhDstudents.Atotalof42submissions(including16Englishpapersand26Chi-
nese papers) were received for the conference. All papers were carefully reviewed in
a double-blind manner and each paper was evaluated by at least three members of an
international Program Committee. From the submissions, eight English papers were
accepted.Thesepapersaddressallaspectsofmachinetranslation,includingimprove-
mentoftranslationmodelsandsystems,translationqualityestimation,document-level
machinetranslation,low-resourcemachinetranslation,etc.Wewouldliketoexpressour
thanks to every person and institution involved in the organization of this conference,
especiallythemembersoftheProgramCommittee,themachinetranslationevaluation
campaign,theinvitedspeakers,thelocalorganizationteam,ourgeneroussponsors,and
theorganizationsthatsupportedandpromotedtheevent.Lastbutnotleast,wegreatly
