Wiley-Blackwell Publishing has authorized the republication of
Ilany Kogan’s chapter, which was originally titled “Working with
psychotic and non-psychotic patients in situations of terror and mili-
tary dictatorships: Report of Panel held at the 43rd Congress of the
IPA, New Orleans”, first published in the International Journal of
Psychoanalysis, 2004, 85: 1247–1249. It was then collected in the
author’s 2007 book, The Struggle Against Mourning, under the title,
“Working with sons and daughters of Holocaust survivors in the
shadow of terror”, published by Jason Aronson.
Dori Laub’s chapter was originally published under the same title
in Contemporary Psychoanalysis, 2005, 41: 307–326. My chapter (Chapter
Seven) was originally published in 2006 in the Journal of the American
Academy of Psychoanalysis and Dynamic Psychiatry, 34: 445–458, under
the title, “Aview from Riggs: Treatment resistance and patient author-
ity—II. Transmission of trauma and treatment resistance”. I am grate-
ful to the editor, Dr Douglas Ingram for his permission to republish
this article, which will also be included in the forthcoming volume,
