Aquello verleniano de «retorcer el cuello a la elocuencia» era algo muy suyo: él, que admiraba tanto a Baudelaire, rompió sistemáticamente todos los moldes de la perfección, del saber hacer versos, e inventó una poesía troceada, con jirones de frases hechas, gritos, argot, retruécanos y citas caricaturescas.Es un Baudelaire desengañado de la Belleza, exasperado, más allá de todas las normas, en clave canalla y grotesca; la gran música de «Las flores del mal» intepretada al acordeón, el piano de los pobres. A veces parece tener alma de letrista de tango, con un desgarro plebeyo y chillón, juzgándose a sí mismo y a su época muy por debajo de cualquier posibilidad de Arte con mayúscula. Pero con una incurable nostalgia de lo perdido.
